yea.... i feel that not going all the way down is a way better work out for my quads... im trying not to hit my hamstrings when doing squats...when doing this i have had nothing but great results...i owe it to phil , i used to bottom out, and i had decent legs but i started doing them this way ... well here is a pic.

Could you explain to him how going lower would benefit his quads as far as growth is concerned?

I can't explain it but I know from years of doing it that way that my knees are almost completely shot...I have to go to a sports medicine Dr. that is a knee specialist to look at them they are so bad. I know I am not going to get some good news...

These last three weeks after my show I have been training legs and from the rebound and from the pain I have been having in my knees I haven't been able to go to 90 degrees on squats so I have been going down to the angle J bierce has been doing and WOW!! My knees didn't hurt and I felt it all in my quads. The last couple workouts like this my quads haven't been this sore in 2 years....I am not that versed or knowledgeable in training, I have TONS to learn in this area, that is why I am here.....:)

wasnt thinking of it in those terms, was thinking tom platz got i believe 27 reps with 495 and this guy is claiming 505 for 30. when i clicked the link he was doing the top 1/4 range of motion. normally when you think squat, or someone claiming a squat # you naturally assume to parallel or better.

whoa, the top 1/4 range of motion is really pushing it man! I would say those were better than half squats as his hammies damn near hit parallel....
I used to have some pretty sick squat #s and have recently been using different movements to hit quads, my current favorite is the hammer strength v-squat machine....AWESOME piece of equipment, feels somewhere in between a traditional back squat and a hack squat. Loading it up and cranking out the bottom 3/4 of the movment without taking that top 1/4 for rest really fries the quads.... Anyway, I digress. I used to throw around a lot of weight on squats and take it very low for high reps, besting at 405 21 times with wraps and a belt. Yrs later, after attending courses on biomechancis, I stopped going quite as deep, and low and behold, quads still grew, possibly more.....

What I am trying to say is that there will always be people that will adhere to "iron rules" and those that find what works best for them to attain the goal in the quickest amount of time. Neither is right or wrong, but should both be focused on their individual prize(s). It still upsets me to think about not squatting as much, but I am getting better growth from the v-squat and completely focusing on legs. My pride has taken a beating though...lol.

Nice work Justin, quads are looking sick bro! You have a monster on your hands Phil....

sorry i'm old-school i was raised in a powerlifting gym:rolleyes:

SINCE HE IS STILL IN THE RACK! PHIL SAYS THAT ITS OK, EVERYONE HAS THEIR WAY OF DOING IT. JUSTIN IS 100% NATURAL AND WE WILL SHOW YOU IN A FEW WEEKS HOW INCREDIBLE HE IS! HE DOES 5 PLATES AND A 5 ON EACH SIDE FOR 30 REPS.

HE IS GOING DOWN PARALLEL, FROM THAT ANGLE IT LOOKS LIKE HE ISNT.

Well you can't argue with results his quads look good, then again Platz clearly was a freak, so the depth debate continues I guess the question is the squat supposed to be for the quads or for the entire leg(hams)? Either way Justin looks good and I am not arguing with Phil

Quad recruitment increases as the knee reaches greater degrees of flexion, esp in the VMO.

Is going deep like an o-lifter necessary for big legs? Not really, you just have to adjust your training accordingly.

Man, watching Platz bang out 23 reps makes me want to head to the gym right now! Tom Platz always said that "Half-Squats will give you half-legs." I've never had knee problems, and I make sure I never go below parallel. I also like to use heavier weights and do half-squats to build up the quad strength, but I always add additional ham work to balance them out.

I remember reading a story in M&F a LONG time ago about a BB who tried to chase down a purse-snatcher. He got about ten yards before pulling a muscle because of the strength imbalance.

Question for ya:

How do you wrap your knees - in the conventional method where you wrap hard below and above the knee and easy on the cap or some other way? I'm asking because I need to start wrapping. Squats are still killing my knees despite all the damned Glucosamine I'm taking... The pain is better, but I think I may have to wrap...

Those are not squats...I have no idea what your doing in a power rack.....I'm an X-powerlifter..and your wasting your time.....

If you want something from a squat then your balls should touching the floor....I seriously doubt you could even squat 405 for 5.....

Hip is suppose to be below parallel.....I've done 740 under uspf judges just in case you think I dont have a clue....
