I could almost guarantee my hips got larger from squatting 600lbs and negatives with 800lbs
Plus 275lb bent over rows..Back in my mid 20's.
Went from a 32" at 6'2" to a perma 34"...36" in bulker!

Empirical evidence for me was the same. The stronger my squat, deads, and bentover rows got the thicker my waist got. It wast fat either because I was just as lean or even leaner. I wouldn't have thought it would do that so much but it seems to have done that to me. Probably more genetics again. I think some don't have the problem. My waist went from being about 34" up to 36" in a few years once I started getting much heavier in those lifts.
 
Years of competitive powerlifting thickened my midsection a ton. No hopes of competing in classic physique with the waist I developed. Could pull and squat in the 700s raw, no knee wraps, for reference (did so in competition). So it may have been the heavier weight / powerlifting goal that caused the issue for me. I don’t think those two movements will always thicken the waist, and any solid training regimens include both movements, especially squats. I do strongly believe that powerlifting or heavy lower movements have given my body, especially my back, a good thickness and density though.
