Any of you ever get just general pain in your calves? Not like muscle soreness or cramping but just an ache? I've been getting this more and more and it sometimes feels tender even behind my knees. I always thought it was from working out and I do give them a beating but this seems to occur when I'm just sitting at work or watching television.

There are no distended veins or swelling so I don't think it's any type of insufficiency.

Just an ache.

Anyone get this? If I jam my thumb into the center of my calf muscle almost to the bone, that's where it feels tender - all the way from my lower calf, I can follow it all the way up the center to the back of my knee.

Really weird.

OTH,

I get this too ... not too bad, just like an ache that makes you wonder WTF? Try putting something heavy in your lap and sitting down .... thats when you will really feel it.

Exactly... like my niece. They ache like a toothache.

I will say this though, those Advil liquigels (or whatever they're called) are night and day to the other ibuprofens. They work pretty well.

And stretches do not help. I have no idea but it's on both calves.

Ouch, not trying to scare you but, if it has anything to do with poor circulation(blood flow), you want a doctor to check it out. You are not Diabetic, are you?

Was diagnosed Type-II years ago but am insulin free for quite some time. My last 3 GTT's were perfectly normal so that would certainly be a curve ball.

This has been going on for probably 4-5 years progressively worse. I will bring it up at my next visit for bloodwork in January. Just thought maybe someone else dealt with it or fixed it.

Also sometimes it will go away for months at a time but always comes back.

It might be due to your back problems. Didn't you mention they are around the L4/L5 or L5/S1 area?

Must be thinking of someone else. I don't have any back problems that I know of. I have a two bum rotators though (one worse than the other).

OOPS. I dont know why but i was thinking about Mikeheavypecs.

I've got nothing for you now...LOL.

Ouch, are you using the wall or the bed frame to get an extra push?

If you are using any such techniques in your EXTRA CURRICULAR endeavors, the calves might simply be very overtrained. Be careful. ;)

Ouch, it's been shown in a few studies that jamming your thumbs into the calf muscle and hitting the bone can cause a general ache in the area. But luckily, it was concluded that if you stop doing that the pain goes away.

But if it isn't from that, given that the pain begins in the insertion points behind the knees, I would think that the pain may possibly be stemming from inflammation in the tendons which is getting "progressively worse" from years of training and abuse because you "give them a beating". Kind of like tendonitis of the calf insertions.

Sounds like a problem I had. There is a small muscle under the Soleus muscle called the Plantaris, its generally a small feeble muscle that lost its usefulness when man evolved from climbing in trees to upright walking.
It origin is posterior femur above the lateral condyle and its insertion is via a long thin tendon into the calcaneus or its tendon.
Many people rupture this tendon/muscle by a movement like pushing a car or something as heavy. It can completely rupture or it can be strained.
May take several weeks of lessened activity and rest..just like any other pulled muscle.
