I can't get up early. Literally anything before 10 A.M. messes me up. I've had this issue all my life as far as I remember and it's NOT the amount of sleep I get, I can go to bed at 4 A.M and get 7 hours and feel fine, but if I go to sleep at 10 P.M. and get 7 hours (waking up at 5) I feel like hell. I've varied the hours so much, from as little as 4 hours per night to as much as 11..... same thing, if I wake up before 9-10 A.M. I'm sick all day

Symptoms:
- Cold..... i'll have to actually carry a jacket in the summer as I'll be shivering and freezing
- Nausea, doesn't go away, it'll be dinner time and I'll still be struggling to eat
- Diarrhea ... no need for detail, but lasts all day too
- Cold-like symptoms, stuffed up, aches and pains, zero energy, headache, sneezing

We're not talking getting up at 5 A.M. here, we're talking days like today that I got up at 7:30 and went to bed around 10:30.... pretty normal hours and yet I can barely function.

I've been asking doctors all my life about this and none seem to have an idea.... they suggest caffeine, but the issue is not that I feel sleepy, it's that I feel physically ill. My parents are the same way, 10 hours of sleep, start their day around 11 or noon and a 2 hour nap in the afternoons, so i'm sure it's genetic but does anyone know if there is an actual name for this??? My parents are self-employed but I work normal jobs and this affects me so much, everyone always asks if I'm sick or if I'm stoned because I look so out of it.

That sounds very frustrating!

I have a sleep issue of having sex in my sleep and being completely unaware of it. Don't sleep next to me unless you want to walk funny. :D

there is no physical reason why you should feel like that getting up at 730am with a full night sleep (8hrs). Your parents are that way, so are you, not really a shocker, learned behavior. You need to reprogram your beliefs and rituals. I guarantee if you MUST get up at 7am tomorrow you will be going to bed thinking, worrying about how sick your gonna be the next day. You wake up thinking oh I feel horrible, today is gonna suck. It`s deeply programmed and all mental. Think it, see it, be it.

Have you tried any kind of sleep specialist?
I work with a gorgeous girl who literally needs 12 hours of sleep a day to function.
I pointed out that she is a knock out because we joke all the time she calls herself a "sloth" and I tell her she is the best looking sloth out there but seriously she barely gets to work by nine gets home by 6 and is in bed by 7 or 8 each night to get her 12 hours. She has tried some meds but none seemed to work but wellbutrin but she still sleeps as much as she can.
She says her parents are the same way, she is an only child and said her direct grandparents were like that as well.
she sleep as much as she can on the weekends but the wellbutrin helped her get out of the depression from the total feeling of sleeping her life away.
That's as far as she took it I have been on her about going to a specialist but she just went to see a shrink instead.
She too was always sick all the time and didn't feel well if she didn't get the sleep she required.
I would seek out a specialist in your case if you can.
good luck with it

Just throwing this out there but maybe its some type of anxiety or depression?
I was on the same shift for 18 yrs and would get up at 5 am. Over that 18 year period I never got used to getting up that early. I was tired all day and especially after work. I did switch shifts for awhile with 5 other guys and we didn't have to be up until 7am. We all agreed we felt much better even if we worked overtime 10-12 hr days. It felt more natural getting up at 7am then literally dragging myself out of bed at 5am. No matter the time I went to bed. I remember asking my father years ago (RIP SYD) how he become accustomed to getting up early and he said 'I never did'. Ive came to the conclusion that work just sucks in general and getting up with the birds is overrated. Being an adult isn't easy and often we have to force ourselves to do things that aren't always comfortable. I have to provide for my family so I have no other options. Hopefully in another 20-25yrs I can afford to retire:cool:

I have to disagree with this. My father got up at 5 A.M. for work for forty years...... you'd think that would be enough time to adapt. The day of his retirement he told me "you know what, in forty years, getting up at 5 A.M. never got better than the first day I had to do it"

I've been getting up early for a good 25 years or so, since school age.... i certainly don't worry about it, not after two plus decades, in fact I fall asleep quite easily, but as soon as I wake up it's a pounding headache and run to the bathroom cause I've got the runs..... I don't know how that's all in my "beliefs" or thinking.

Hell if you need me up at 3 A.m I can do it, I have done it, but 12 hours later at dinner time I'll still be throwing up, shivering, sneezing etc.

I totally agree that it shouldn't be pleasant, my worry is that I'm actually too physically sick to function.... I'll have days at work where I'll constantly have to be excusing myself to either use the bathroom or vomit/dry heave.... that's a far cry from just feeling tired/sleepy which I think almost everyone does.

I can really relate to the other poster about the girl sleeping 12 hours per day. My mother has done that her whole life, very successful entrepreneur but she starts her day at noon otherwise forget about it, migraines, vomiting, she'll come down with a cold or at least a bad cough etc.

I could have sworn there's a term for this, a small percentage of people's circadian rhythms are naturally pushed forward.... so for example i feel at noon the way most people do at 7 a.m.

How can I say is it all mental and built in your beliefs as "a must" , "def. going to happen"?? Because you just said it!!! If you get up early you WILL be sick. Can you honestly say it is a possibility that one day you get 8 hours of sleep and wake up at 7am and NOT feel sick all day? You believe, 100% sickness will be there every single time.

Waking up before sunrise can mess with the internal clock a little bit, but not illness. Your talking about waking up for 10am though.
