Stretching

Just to let the younger guys on here know. Some of the guys on here are just BB or weight lifters. If you want to be functional in other sports, you better have a stretching component in your training program. I have been training and competing in BB and powerlifting for the last 30 years and still can play a good game of basket ball or other sports.

You think loss of flexibility does cause injuries or pain. ie tight hamstrings

My opinion is that tight hamstrings are a result of overly strong quads and muscle imbalance. If the hams are trained to be in balance with the quads there would be no loss of flexability or tightness.

What about people with low back problems? Many people with low back issues that have tight lumbar musculature have tight hamstrings. They both attatch to the pelvis at different ends and you kind of end up with a tug of war to keep the pelvis stable.

Remember, it's just my opinion but I think in people like you described it is a cascade effect. The lower back is tight and the hams are going to react but in these cases I'm thinking the whole problem stems from weak abdominal muscles. Again just my opinion but I believe the human body works as a whole in harmony and when there is an imbalance somewhere there is a negative reaction.

personally

When I am training right, I like to stretch before during and after. Don't know why but in my mind it helps me grow. :)

Yes, I agree, many time it is because of weak core musculature. Unfortunately other times in older folks it is due to arthritic and degenrative conditions caused from all sorts of different reason from genetics to MVA's. Also many times it is due to ignorance in proper lifting techniques and years of bad habits.
