Sudden muscle cramps after years of training?

Hey all, I've been experiencing muscle cramps in my triceps, biceps/forearms, chest, lats and abs. The abdominal and chest cramps are especially painful and last on and off for 5 minutes. I've been working out 10 years and this has never happened in these areas. I'm concerned there's some kind of health issue. This started a month after taking a proton pump inhibitor omeprazole. Just looking for a little insight.

Any diet, supplement, or AAS changes (especially orals)? You could try 5-6gm of taurine. A small dose of potassium, but don't over do this. Of course make sure you're well hydrated.

I have taurine lying around unopened I'll start taking it today and see if it helps :) I was going to pickup some low-sodium V8 juice since it has potassium in it as well. I'm drinking a little over a gallon of water daily so I don't think it's a hydration issue. Only supplement changes are I started taking a b12 supplement, Essential Amino Acid supplement and the Omeprazole prescription.

A banana a day keeps the cramping away. 1 banana provides roughly 23% of your daily recommended value of potassium. It's also consider a prebiotic (gut health). Dehydration can cause cramping too.

This has happened to me too... I never pinpointed exactly what it was... but it was def some kind of nutritional imbalance. I added a few things to my daily regiment and things cleared up after a while (b vitamins, zinc, alpha gpc, other things i can't remember)... I'm confident it wasn't a lack of taurine, sodium or potassium... prob not much help. But I wouldn't freak out..

How often do u stretch those muscle groups? Are the cramps usually after u worked out that muscle group?

For me if I'm on cycle and gain a lot of muscle in a short period of time my muscle fibers become tighter/shorter and cramp up if using them after I've worked them out. I also don't stretch much but should.

For example if I worked out biceps and I'm shampooing my hair that night or the morning after, sometimes they cramp up.

Same with hamstrings if I flex them while sitting, a day after working them out, get insane cramps

According to naturopathic doctors, proton pump inhibitors are one of the most dangerous drugs ever created. Besides the damage that can cause in the kidneys and other organs, they lower the ability of the digestive system to absorb nutrients. In your case, the cramps Im POSITIVE is lack of micronutrients.

People will advise you to take this much taurine, this mach magnesium, this much potassium, but that is wrong. Yes, you might be low in those, but in reality, you're low on ALL essential nutrients. All minerals, all vitamins, all amino acids, all fatty acids. You might not get another symptom, but is a matter of time until something breaks. Completely revise your diet and make sure on top of a healthy diet you supplement with the 90 essential nutrients. Diet IS NOT enough. Again, diet IS NOT enough. There is no possible way to intake the necessary amount of each nutrient just from diet alone. Simply because like never before, nutritional value of food is very low. And even if it was still normal, humans need way more than what just a few veggies alone can provide.

Why low sodium?

Dude....

https://www.drugs.com/omeprazole.html

"symptoms of low magnesium--dizziness, confusion; fast or uneven heart rate; tremors (shaking) or jerking muscle movements; feeling jittery; muscle cramps, muscle spasms in your hands and feet; cough or choking feeling."

Low magnesium, I get leg cramps after leg workout unless I take a a magnesium supp, ZMA works good.

You should consider stopping the PPI , omeprazole is typically used 4 weeks at a time and sounds like you are past 4 weeks

The abs cramp EVERY time about 10 reps into the first ab exercise. It feels like bugs crawling under my skin then hard contractions. Chest and tris cramp after the first set. I don't stretch except for my abs. I usually just do light warm up sets for the muscle group trained. I've had cramps before in the legs especially calves, I just never experienced it in the new areas in my whole life. So it got me worried ya know?

I was worried that might be the case. I stopped the omeprazole precisely because I was afraid of not absorbing nutrients. It was prescribed to me for stomach issues I'm currently dealing with. I need to read into the 90 essential nutrients.

Why low sodium?

I just thought low sodium V8 was better. The regular version has a lot of sodium.

I got my magnesium tested it's within normal range.

I've been on it since November I stopped taking it two weeks ago. My Gastro doctor was a shill for it and said there's no side effects  and it's perfectly safe. Lol.

Exactly my thought!

People often say lack of potassium or mag when they cramp up, when most of the time it's actually a lack of salt... this society is so afraid of eating too much sodium (low NA+ this low NA+ that all over the media), that folks seriously needing it like sportsmen or people working outside in the sun are becoming seriously depleted.

EagleCall mentioned proton pump inhibitors, clen and insulin can also be a major cause of cramping.

:yeahthat:

I just didn't want to type all that.:p:D

I sweat a lot with my job in the summer. Use to get cramps, was exhausted at the end of the day. I started taking in a LOT more sodium in the form of mostly sea salt. Haven't had a cramp in years and I have much more energy in the evening.

Good post!

Well the taurine didn't help. Both pecs cramped so bad tonight I think I tore or strained my right pec trying to force my arm to straighten out while it was contracted during the cramp. I'll try potassium next and get magnesium as well. If that doesn't work then sodium. I've been off the PPI (omeprazole) ~ 2 weeks now.

Exactly. Sodium phobia is another scare tactic spread by doctors who have no training nor experience in nutrition. Sodium is a basic electrolyte imperative for health. Today everything lack salt in restaurants of home cooking "because the doctor said so" like if he was a representative of the Gods on Earth. There is absolutely NO correlation between sodium and blood pressure. NONE. The raise in blood pressure in the presence of sodium is a consequence of chronic nutrient deficiency. Trace minerals to be specific, being one of the most peculiar, Selenium.

I've read that for SOME, that sodium can be an issue with BP. But that's the small minority, if it's even true. Low sodium diets run cardiovascular issues like heart attacks.

That's good that you're off that. Stop being afraid of sodium. You want better pumps when you train? Take in more sodium, along with plenty of water. I haven't made a point to take in the other stuff, like potassium, magnesium, etc. Only sodium, no cramping issues.

Sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium could all be responsible. Athletes need far more sodium than recommended. I love beef bouillon cubes. A banana has about 400 mg of potassium when you need about 4700 mg. Try some Potassium bicarbonate. Magnesium 400-500mg. I prefer taurate. 500mg of calcium carbonate has 200mg calcium and 300mg of carbonate. You need at least 500mg of just calcium.
