okay, heres the problem.

I graduate the end of the month from college, with a degree in phys ed, concentration Exercise science. Unfortunatly there arent 2 many jobs out there that reguire an ex sci degree. I know i can go back to school get my masters and that will open up a few more doors. but idk whats out there. Ive gone on a couple of interviews this week for sales. and had gotten a few jobs and rejected them bc i feel that i will not be completly satisfied with those companies.

Currently im not working, im trying to find a "career" that i would like to progress in. I was a personal trainer the last 3 years, and i do like it. however working for someone puts me in a bind because i believe my services are worth more than these chain gyms around here do.... I have been contemplating the idea of opening up my own studio. more functional trianing and general healthcare.

Ive applied to a couple of places that are looking for exercise specialists, exercise physiologist etc etc. and they normally require 3-5 yrs of management expercience and what not.

I was thinking of going back to school for ocupational therapy because i feel that job would help fulfill my goals. of beaing happy helping others and watching others succeced.

is any one on here an occupational therapist, succesful personal trainer, gym owner, or anyone with an ex sci degree. I guess im just at road block right now and i dont know what i can do.

thanks KCM

was in the same situation like you. i think occupational therapy or any medical profession is great, but I went for Nursing, it has a lot more oppurtunity and you can do a lot in the field, plus make a difference and you only work 3 days a week, but it can be draining. It takes a year for the fast track degree. Best move I made, I still PT and love to train, its just not my career. Good luck bro

Plus it pays great and nurses are always in high demand.

My only advice if you stick to training is to stay Independent. I have been for the last 4 years and would never go back to working for some one. There are other avenues for opening doors to your career as well besides school. I have been trying for awhile now to work as an apprentice under Charles Glass sine he's local, just to add a bit to my tool box.

KCM,
I was 1.5 full YEARS into a Exercise science degree , like you are about to get, and was so scared fo getting in the situation your in now (or making 'average' for rest of my life) by other professors I compromised and straired away from my dream. I transferred to biology, for medical field (med school in '09), but still minoring in Exe. Sci.

A lot of people may bash me for my decision but looking back it was right IMO. I heard once and STRONGLY believe in: "We must do what we don't want to do to do what we want to". Also I looked at all the jobs the Exe.Sci could get me, and most of them were obtainable in someway with only a high school degree.

Good luck finding a job! I really hope following your passion does land you a good job.

Note: Those talking about nursing, that's another 3-4 years alone - it's a whole other degree. And if some of you know what insurance companies are doing right now combined with what 'socialized health care' (not biased I am a liberal overall) will do. some would not recommend health field.

hey guys, thanks alot for the advice. i would deffinatly agree with staying independant in the personal training business, nursing would be another few years for the degree, i know alot of guys that are actually doig that, and they are struggling w/ classes and what not. im not worried about how hard any of the clases are, because i know they will be interesting. I think that i will continue going to school and beter my knowledge and hopefully i will figure out what i want to do. i like all of the science classes and i will probably start with those.

thanks for the suggestions, you guys are great.

I was taking Nursing classes for awhile but finances have made me stop for a bit. An RN degree is 2 years and depending on where your at you'll start no lower than $55,000 plus your sign on bonuses and incentives! Males get a higher premium at most places as well, why? Cause there's less than 25% of men in the work force and over 60% of the NATION is considered OBESE. Can you imagine some little woman trying to lift and 250, 300, 400lb person. Travel nursing is the way to go! Can be around $80,000 to start and go from there and they generally pay your living expenses and some sort of daily perdium. I know when I went to Vegas to visit a buddy I looked in papers and called around to see what things where like $20,000 signing bonuses for a 2 year contract plus they would pay the first years rent or a portion of a mortage. Vegas can't keep people there and as fast as people come in there's always work!
I went into the Vegas Health and Athletic club to train for this week, while there talked to some of the trainers. Suppossedly they were pulling in around $5,000-$8,000 a month. Obviously some make alot less than that and some more than that. But they each facility had about 120,000 members according to there front desk.
Personal training where I live is hard to be successful!! People in the midwest expect personal training to come with there membership and have no idea of how it works. I was going into one facility training 2 people together and either I was paying a daily fee or they would pay it. But the gym only allowed that a few times and wouldn't let me come back in without buying a membership from them. Tried to force my clients to use their trainers, even asked them to consider finding a new gym if they weren't satisfied with what they offer. Even last year I tried to get things back going and worked out of this 24 hour gym independently, he didn't mind as long as I went and got insurance (which wasn't bad as there' a place here that covered me for like $150.00 for the year) But then tried to also tax me a % after the first month. Mind you he doesn't offer trainers and it's magnetic keys, so he's almost never there. So no one can help anyone. Plus like I said the mind set, I gave these 2 sister a deal and told them $40 per session as long as they were together. They thought it was too much for the 2 of them together. So one session and we were done. People are so narrow minded and expect things for nothing these days.
Just follow your dreams and what makes you happy!!!
