Kaiser,
If I were to get the itch to build my own "super-computer", what would you suggest without breaking the bank?
Intel i7 or AMD Phenom II
Asus, MSI or ASRock Motherboard
Solid State Disk or SATA 2
Micro ATX or Mini ITX form factor (limited space)
XP 64 bit or W7 64 bit

Thank you.

I say an overclocked i5 is the best way to go. I just built one with an MSI P55-GD65 motherboard and 4GB DDR3 with a Radeon 4890 on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit and it is an insane machine

Well, supercomputer would not be what you would build. A supercomputer is something like a Cray:

Cray Inc., The Supercomputer Company - Products - XT

You are talking in the hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars.

Anyway, I have to be honest, unless you are able to build one yourself and have access to wholesale pricing, I would suggest you buy one already built. For some of your best bangs for your buck, Build a new Dell online, then go to the Outlet section ofr Dell and see if you can match it up. Siginificant savings, and you will get the same warranty.

I wonder if their computers come in the racks pictured lol, definitely would be the best looking supercomputer in the datacentre :p

I just built one, it cost a little under $800.00

AMD Phenom II 955 Processor Quad core(3.2Ghz) Very overclockable most report 4.0
Gigabyte AM3 Motherboard MA785 GMT (onboard video and sound)
4 Gig Gskill ddr3 Ram
500 Gig Western Digital Sata2 hard drive
PSU 650 watt powersupply.
Windows 7 Pro 64
24" Gateway HD monitor

The case (ATX mid tower)keyboard, mouse and DVDR I had and re-used.

It's pretty responsive and quick. I'm quite satisfied.. I'll probably get a better graphics card later along with a Blue Ray drive. I got everything at Newegg.com much cheaper then what's offered local. Should last me a while before needing upgraded.:)

I have my PC on about 800mg of test a week and it feels super...LoL

Brand name computer

It would be nice if there can be a computer made that's virus proof.

Easily done.

Unplug the ethernet cable, turn off the wireless card, don't plug in any portable storage devices, and don't let anyone else touch it. Voila! Safe. Not very useful, but safe. :D

No malware at all

Nice advice... I was told this years ago to disconnect myself from the internet if I want to feel completely safe from malware/ hackers .

Yes,, the racks are exactly as pictured. Also, Dell has partnered with them now for clustering.

Built this machine 6 months ago:

CPU: AMD PHENOM II X4 965 AM3 3.4G RT
MB: DFI LanParty DK 790FXB-M3H5 AM3 790FX
Power: KINGWIN 800watt
HDD: Kingston 64G SSDNow 230MBps
RAM: OCZ Special Ops 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1066
Video: nVidia GTS250

Already had a case and the needed peripherals, but for the parts above I dropped just about $900. I have very unusual requirements, so this isn't the best layout for gaming or normal use, but it's a relatively cheap, powerful, extensible foundation. You can get half the RAM and substitute the hard drive for a larger, cheaper, non-SSD if you aren't trying for excessive performance, save about $220 and still have a solid box.
