I am so fucking depressed right now. I am 99% sure I just tore my left biceps playing a recreational softball game. I felt immediate pain and the lower (by elbow) biceps has rolled up to mid bicep area. It is essentially flat in the lower/inner biceps from the elbow to mid bicep area. It is painful and my forearm is already swelling. This occurred just a few hours ago. I went to the urgent care and they took an xray (which of course showed nothing). I need to get a referral to an ortho for mri etc. but cannot even start that process until monday. They sent me home with a script for naproxin or whatever, but thats it. I am on google looking at things, but any input is appreciated. Ice...heat...keep immobile....try to move it....massage???? I am open. But fucking depressed. I am reading biceps surgery takes many months of recovery. I am 54. I don't have a year to burn.

I had a friend who was destined for “the show” tore his biceps like you did playing the game that was going to give him fame and fortune (wrong). They never reattached it. He would barbell curl lopsided. Never seen anything like it since.

That will not happen to you.

As in your case it is not the end of the world. And I by no means am trying to trivialize you personal situation.

My only advise is get it reattached if it is unattached as you say it is, ASAP and in the meantime keep it immobilized and apply cold, note heat. Do not massage it or move it (think about a sling) the faster you get this procedure, the better your odds are for success and the better your chances are for a full recovery which I am sure you are capable of.

I am not a doctor but I do wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.

tendon ruptures happen, the good news today with good surgery your gona make a speedy recovery and your arm will be actaully stronger and more dependable than before since it now has metal screws teflon in the ect, at least hypotheticaly speaking. my pec rupture didnt take that long at all to get mobility back, no need to be depressed, use the time to work on something else

thanks for the words of encouragement. im 54, working out is my only real hobby. its what i look forward to daily so the idea of losing that for a long period of time has me seriously depressed. i just want the surgery asap so i can start rehab.

I feel your pain brother. I’d keep it immobilized and keep icing it. Get it reattached if complete tear. I’ve had mine reattached and recovered fine. Currently recovering from hip replacement surgery. But I do know how it makes you feel

I've been in your shoes it sucks. But each time I was able to come better than before. You will too

First injury was pec tear couldn't lift. Used the time to diet down get lean lean and realized " damn I like this look when I get back I don't want to be 240 ( I was carrying a lot of fat) I can look great at 200 lean .

I'm sure your already dialed in but use the time to perfect diet, get that insulin sensitivity perfect so when you start hitting the gym, boom. Hit the cardio hard, get all the health markers perfect, so when you start training fully again your the leanest, healthiest, best sensitivity to AAS, insulin, you've ever been, heart in great shape from the cardio. Will be able to hit legs soon, side delts (padded machine), probably some oh work, can destroy traps on the calf raise machine by shrugging up on the pads, can probably hammer rear delts pretty hard, make those parts priority (of course) consult with PT. Then In due time arms , back training again. And as always, find the best pt you can that works with athletes that's the key

Good luck with the right mindset your going to look better in a year IMO. I did.

thanks man this helps. i forgot about those calf machine shrugs. good stuff here

I ruptured my bicep but as it didn't hurt or slow me down i didn't do a thing till a few years later when they were reattaching 2 of my rotators that had torn from the bone. And i had the rupture taken care of then and made good recovery.

I had mine reattached 6 months ago. I had to wait like 4-5 months for surgery too but the surgery seems successful anyway. Waiting for surgery I trained everything, stuff involving the bicep too, deadlifts etc. It was torn and loading it more didn't make it worse. As my surgeon told me, 16 weeks after surgery you SHOULD expose it to full loading. He said the goal wasn't to just make it functional again, it was to make it exactly as strong as before and not be afraid of loading. So far it's held up. It's just a little bit shorter than the other one. My initial doctors recommended against surgery, said it would regain function just fine, perhaps weaker in supination. I didn't accept it, even just the aesthetics is important. I'm 45. They might advice more against surgery as the patient is older since they say recovery is worse after like 40.

I fully ruptured my right distal bicep tendon about 4 years ago deadlifting in a powerlifting meet. Generally you want surgery the sooner the better because the tendon retracts. I think they want surgery done in 2 weeks, maybe 3 weeks max.

Anyways I was exactly where you are right now. Surgery wasn't bad at all. I was back in the gym a week after surgery using the safety squat bar (because you only need one hand to hold it) and squatting in a sling. I was very proactive about rehab, its really important because you really want to recover full range of motion.

After four years the bicep that i had surgery on actually feels stronger than the other one.

Obviously you need surgery as soon as possible, but in the meantime train everything else that you can at least as you would normally knowing that after surgery you'll have at least a little bit of time that the docs will want you to be completely down. When I tore mine they had me in surgery literally 5-7 days after it happened.

I torn my bicep at the same time I tore my Pec I believ it was 2018 or 2019. The bicep wasn’t even remotely close to as bad as I tore my Pec. I took off 3
Weeks I believe it was completely. Then when I started back I jus did uninlateral stuff to keep me active and muscle moving. And then very very slowly starting introducing exercise back again for my arms but first was just body weight related stuff and then orogrsssed in to moves the felt safe and started the process lifting extremely light and just listening to my body

I do want to mention I never had my bicep tear respites surgically or even my Pec even though afte Mr the scans and ultra sound they said my Pec needed it. I eventually rehabbed it myself which was a long process but if I could go back I woulda def had my Pec done. The only surgery I had done cuz I had no choice was when I tore my tricep tendon. And even now after almost 2 years now my strength on pushing types exercise only got to about 65-75% strength . I’m still grateful for that. Here’s some pics of the Pec/bicep tear and tricep/tendon tear

Clarifying question. You did NOT have surgery on biceps? If so, how is the strength now...and what does it look like? Noticeably shorter?

You said you trained everything whilst waiting for surgery, is it painful to train after it’s torn?

Much respect for all you members that have shared your injury stories. Luckily I have avoided any serious injuries or major surgeries so know not the pain and suffering that you all have been through.

And after reading your stories, all of you all are twice the men as I. It would have been surgery ASAP, rehab, and then pick up another sport . . . like lawn bowling 🙂

I somehow navigated the turbulent insurance system waters and managed to get an appointment for surgery. TODAY. I suffered the injury on Friday and 6 days later I am going under the knife. Not bad for having an HMO where I first needed to be referred to a specialist by my primary care physician. Doctor seems confident he can fix it, but did say it will be 9 months plus before it is back to regular strength.

Good luck brother, and bet we soon will see a recovery log from you (y)

goodluck. Tendon is hopefully in good shape getting it done so quickly.
