So my son's teacher suggested my son might need adderall and hes 8. im very hesitant in putting him on it, ive never taken it but I do know its not good for kids long term or at young ages. so honestly im looking to hear from anyone that has been on it, or have kids on it or any smart folks that have a insightful opinion. TIA

Get a second opinion before you do anything, and not from a teacher.

just because they’re a teacher doesn’t mean they’re an expert on neurodevelopment disorders (which ADD seems to be classified as)

Probably would want to get an opinion from a doctor on that one like alfresco suggested.

As someone that used it in college though— I’d say stay as far away from that as possible unless they absolutely need it. It’s a terrible drug. was helpful for the all night study sessions but a lot of negatives too

The teacher is not a doctor nor should give out medical advice. Tell the teacher next time you will report to the school board for giving out medical advice to children.

Go tell your kids teacher to eat one and then slap them across the face and report them! It's not any teachers business to make any kind of suggestions like that toward any child. Their education isn't even worth a full years salary or know if they'll have a job the next year and then have to find some second hand job to tie them over for the rest of the year, after getting their 4 year degree to teach. Just some food for thought...

My experience with it, they put me on it in elementary school. I hated it. At recess, I felt like a robot and didn't find any of my friends jokes funny and just stood around waiting for class to start again instead of playing any of the sports my friends were. I told my mom about it and she had me stop taking it right away.

Personally I feel its beyond a toxic idea to give this to a child or anyone under say 16-18. It is a drug and it does give a body high that a lot of people, specially women enjoy. So, yeah its sometimes hard for kids to pay attention in class, specially when they're not interested in something. It's like meeting someone the first time you're not interested in or care for and then forgetting their name immediately after.

It’s basically like giving a kid meth. It’s bad shit

I mean if they have actual severe add it could have its uses or it wouldn’t have been fda approved, but again, that’s for the medical professionals

As said ad nauseam, see a Doc and get him diagnosed first.

Also, It seems inappropriate for your sons teacher to suggest to you that he needs this in order to function. Not just because its a powerful drug, but because they arent a Doc and just in general.... "Your son needs drugs in order go function" I dont know, maybe Im being a Karen here.

Its an extremely powerful drug. I have a prescription but im not an 8 year old boy or a parent either. I didnt start taking it till I was like 35.

What is he doing in school that would prompt such a statement?

# 1 I would report the teacher.

Unless the campus security has been an issue . teacher cant handle someone that age shouldnt be anywhere near a school

Wouldn't go down that road man, as other have suggested, grab a second opinion / explore other options. Additionally, there are many OTC supplements that can very effective for focus, but are extremely safe, and do not have the dopamine receptor destruction effects or dependency issues. Unfortunately, it is very easy to get prescribed, and often times docs just throw it out like candy. So be thorough in your vetting of the medical advice.

Also, not if this would ever need to be considered on your end, but it can be disqualifying for some youth sports, collegiate athletics, the military etc.

so let me state im fully aware the teacher saying doesn't carry any weight and honestly a doctor wouldn't necessarily either by itself. but I posted to get more information so to speak on the people that have used it and from anyone that has children already on it.

thats exactly why I was asking, cause even for doctors they do hand it out like candy sadly. appreciate all the replies so far though! and yes we are taking him to a doctor we trust to just get an idea.

I am curious what OTC supplements do you think work well for that age?

If focus is issue . I d post in MIKEs thread and ask him . He has a few products trust him more most DRs

Speaking from experience, used it in college. Had some friends in the class that said I raised my hand everytime the teacher asked a question and answered it. Teacher emailed me after class and thanked me for being such an active participant. I’ve never felt more wired in my life, would not recommend giving to a child but I’m not a doctor

I cannot even imagine giving it to an 8 year old.

I'll put together a small list when I get back to the house. I am not advocating for OTC stuff for what it is worth, just that are definitely some things if it is a focus issue, that would be safe a child of that age, or at least you can ask that same provider about them for your child.

The risk of putting an 8 year old on Adderal just isn’t worth it IMO. His brain isn’t even fully developed so using a drug that can potentially cause dementia wouldn’t even be on the table if it were me.

I understand the teacher is likely just sharing what other students parents have done for their child, but it doesn’t make it healthy or right. It’s almost become a baseline for kids and students to perform their best. But it comes with a long term set of risk.

Fix his diet and lifestyle first and foremost. From there find out if it’s truly a focus issue or is it an anxiety issue. I can’t tell you the number of docs I’ve seen who write scripts for Adderall in anxiety cases. Then when it amps them up they medicate that as well. Fixing the root cause is always ideal.

A good b complex, Alpha GPC, Ginko and huperzine A are great for focus. But if it’s as simple as some anxiety or anxiousness some GABA and theanine will do wonders.

I spent over a decade of my life using Adderall daily in my 20’s. Can’t say I regret it at this moment as it served me very well. But I also live my life now and operate much smoother and healthier without it. Knowing the long term risk would I have thought twice or taken less? Yes. Would I ever put my kid on it? No.

That’s a fucking teacher..she isn’t a doctor or mental health professional..fuck that bitch..these damn teachers will do anything to make their job easier.

Seriously, I did public school..my wife did private school…when I met my wife my father in law told me even if you suffer a little because of the price, private school is worth it…so glad I did private school for my kids..a teacher at my kids school saying some shit like that wouldn’t be a teacher anymore

I coached 15 years at public school . that crap
