teacher suggested adderall for my son...asking the dads & smart folks.

So my son's teacher suggested my son might need adderall and hes 8. im very hesitant in putting him on it, ive never taken it but I do know its not good for kids long term or at young ages. so honestly im looking to hear from anyone that has been on it, or have kids on it or any smart folks that have a insightful opinion. TIA
Report the teacher, the replacement will think better before giving medical advice.

It is illegal for a teacher to recommend any kind of medication for a student. They can suggest getting evaluations, but never suggest medications or medical treatments. I’d file a complaint against that teacher.

It’s certainly a terrible idea and practice to do so, but I’m pretty confident that it is not illegal to recommend a medication or treatment.

Start with a non-stimulant like Guanfacine, Clonidine, or Atomoxetine first. Stimulants work well but also can come with a lot more side effects than the non-stimulants. Just for food for thought! If you do go the stimulant route, Methylphenidates usually are tolerated better in younger kids like Concerta and Focalin as opposed to Amphetamines like Adderall and Vyvanse.

I was a high school teacher for 26 years. Those poor kids that were on that crap in my classes were like zombies.
Most of the time teachers with zero classroom discipline bitched enough to counselors, that kids were “recommended” to be put on meds, and in my experience, doctors prescribed that stuff like candy.
It dulls those kids down.

I took a psychopharmacology class and learned that when kids are put on it young it halts brain development. When I had a high energy kid, I literally would get them busy doing something physical and find ways to direct their energy.

I had one kid named Theo who was legit hyper (and fun) who would come in my freshman biology class and I would tell him to go run a lap around the building and come back.
“Won’t I get in trouble, Mr. X?”
Me: “If anyone has a problem, tell them I told you to do it and they can come talk to me about it.”
He was fine and just needed to run some of that out of his system.

All the other teachers bitched and sent him to the office all the time. I thought he was great.

please get an opinion from a qualified professional not bro advice from a bunch of gym rats

It was difficult but I am so glad I didn’t do it . It helps him now that older. He has the ability knowledge to handle when the arise as adult

Would that not be a conflict of interest? That’s like a day care employees telling all the parents to give their kids NyQuil so they don’t have to do anything. We have a generation of lazy employees.

Hell no!!! My brother was put on that shit as a 4th grader and it changed him in a bad way. We don’t need more medicated kids. He is full of energy and that’s great. That’s what boys do!!!! We are wide open waiting for PE!!! Least I was.

I’m sure Thoe has not forgotten you for helping him ❤️

Your child has a hard time focusing and paying attention in class for 8 hours per day.

Lets dive a little further

In an atmosphere which confines his movement, does not foster thought nor independence, does not adequately provide PE in the current era, feeds your kid (assuming he is buying lunch) absolute trash, artificial light all day, and most likely has to listen to a teacher whose dreams failed them a decade ago drone on about things he even as a child realizes is forced curriculum.

Respectfully, your kid sits in a prison cell all day. It literally sounds like hell to me.

This would be a HARD pass for me - adderral is amazing for individuals with low dopaminetic activity. Not kids being strapped to chairs expected to behave in a manner which is counter productive to millions of years of evolution.

Honestly - I don't like cursing on here as I feel it detracts from anything logical. But fuck your teacher.

As work office walls and school structure can feel like prisons and restrict free thinking. This is not to all and majority of juveniles in the school system. Kids adapt to the structure with some adhering earlier in age than others.

ADD & ADHD often don’t show up as a stand alone diagnosis. Adults and children often have one or more conditions alongside it (co-occurring). Such as: anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, , sleep disturbances and disorders, behavioral issues (oppositional defiant disorder) etc.

It’s in my opinion that these should be evaluated before any medication is introduced. Even supplements.

Your teacher is definitely out of line. Any medication recommendations should come from a juvenile psychiatrist if it can be afforded. Some kids you can have the patients with to not introduce medication if the home life is conducive. Others you can’t. So I don’t agree with her blanket statement.

prescribing a kid adderall should be a crime and that teacher needs to be in jail. She's obviously never taken adderall. It's crazy addictive and if you're on it and don't stop, the drug will stop it for you and you won't like how it ends.

The teacher is trying to make her job easier.. Its sad really..

Thy fuc**d up when they took discipline out of school years back. Of course thats my personal opinion.

I wouldn't put my kid on any of that shit...Public school system is not there to decide what meds kids should be on.

I’d be extremely hesitant putting an 8 year old on Adderall before exhausting other options first. Just my opinion 👊🏻

We started using some b complex, Alpha GPC and its done wonders. so we are gonna stick with that. Also I did have a chat with the teacher worked that out as well. appreciate everyone who given their experience being on it and what to do instead.

Might want to look into getting folate RBC or folate serum checked with vitamin d and b12 (discontinue b12 if you can 2 weeks prior). MTHFR gene screening should be checked if blood test is borderline or abnormal.
