Any of you guys/ladies ever had this and if so whats the best thing to prevent it or help with the discomfort?

Was lifting last night and felt a sharp pain in my right forearm, top bone near the elbow joint. Got gradually worse through the evening so I iced it and elevated it and took a couple of painkillers.
Couldn't sleep cos of the pain and this morning I couldnt grip anything or straighten my arm. The pain was immense, it felt like someone was twisting a burning hot poker and broken glass into the joint.... honestly :D

Spoke to my doc and he said anti-inflammatories and painkillers should help and to stop lifting weights for a couple of weeks, standard answer of someone thats never touched a weight in his life and doesnt understand the addictive nature of bbing. Fuck that.

Ive took some anti-inflams and am waiting for them to kick in.

If anyone has any 'better' advice or experience of this I'd appreciate your input. I know the bro's on here will understand my reluctance to just sit around waiting for it to heal.

Cheers :)

do your fingers on the injured elbow get numb? If so its most likely your ulner nerve. It sucks, im going through the same thing right now.

fingers are ok, I get the odd pins and needles tingling down my forearm but I think thats just one of the sides.

2 things I did when I had elbow tendonitis... doubt this helps but oh well i typed it so why not post it

- Ice water baths in the sink (you need a pretty big sink and 2-3 ice cube trays). do this before and after your workout if you really must work out. edit : ice water elbow baths that is, lol

- Tiger balm... this numbs the area pretty good. worked for me but I guess it depends on how deep your pain is located.

i was under the impression that ibuprofen hinders muscle mass gains so i went with these localized methods instead...

Strap it up.

There is a strap that can be placed around the forearm just below the elbow. It helped alleviate some of the pain for me, also it helped it keep from flaring up as bad while lifting.

I had the same thing where i could not grip things cause the pain in my elbow was so bad. I dont know about you but i got it beacuase i just lifted heavy (6-12reps) all time. Someone told me that i just didnt allow my tendons a chance to catch up in strength to my muscle and that i needed to use a weight that allowed me to lift without pain and then change my rep range to 15-20 to allow the tendon to strengthen. I hated doing this but i stuck with it for about a month and i havent had the pain come back since. Its essentially the same as laying off it but at least you can still lift a little.

Tennis Elbow blows bro... I worked with the pain for so long it finally got to the point i couldn pick shit up. I went to the Docs office for a shot of cortisone and everything felt fine. 2 weeks later the pain came back again so i scheduled another appt. with the Doc. He gave me another shot of Cortisone but this time I didnt do any type of lifting. Just some cardio and light legs and after 4 weeks things seemed pretty good. I just took it easy for a while after that but tennis Elbow comes and goes. It isnt a one time thing.. Their are some things you can do to make the flare ups far and few between.. You can get a brace that goes around your forearm for Tennis elbow,, take some Motrin b4 some workouts and just dont go too heavy and rest is very important from time to time... Hope evrything works out for ya bro....( Im knocking on wood right now hoping mine doesnt flare up) take care

Oh yeah i almos forgot, i use elbow sleeves from APT and has really helped me while im lifting... i only really need them for pressing movements everything else doesnt bother me.

I've had tendonitis several times. Cissus seems to help prevent it.

Careful with the cortisone: it helps with the pain (inflamation) but it also weakens the tendons, increasing the risk of recurrence.

I currently have the same recurring problem, lifting straps, lots of rest, ibuleve max strength rubbed onto the area pre training.

Many years ago, I have an orthopeadic manipulator just look at it feel my elbow pull and twist it a couple of times and the then viola, it did not come back for over 7 years, for me it is always caused by deadlifts, and my poor form or too much weight, and then every other exercise involving that arm seems to agrivate the situation.

At the mo I avoid deadlifts, I avoid anthing that really antagonises the joint, I have changed my training to a more 3 times a week schedule, so that the area gets lots of rest, yesterday was painful but I woke this morning feeling fine. But the best advice is that rest/doing nothing does not work, I think you have to work with the injury, all I found was that in doing nothing is that after the lay off I came back and within 1 session the injury was back.

Strapping it up well if you are working that area helps to support the joint, and after I work that area I take off the straps, Oh and one of the best, I decided that my legs were weak and focussed on them for a bit :p which just gave my arm joints a rest in general.

Thanks for all your replies and advice guys its well appreciated.

Ive been icing the joint and using deep heat spray as well. I got an elastic support bandage that covers the whole area that seems to be helping too.

Ive heard similar things about ibuprofen and muscle mass but I figured I'll just dose up on them for a few days so no long term hinderance to muscle growth.

I trained legs yesterday as I cant just sit around and wait for this to heal :)

It actually feels a bit better today and as long as I take youngguns advice and try higher reps and lower weight to rehab it, I think it should be cool.

Its shit when you have some sort of injury or long standing pain that means you cant go balls to the wall on every exercise, but I'm sure most of us that lift weights have at least one part of the body thats damaged and could actually benefit from a more laid back lifestyle. But that is not an option :D

thanks again.

I had tendonitis in the elbows for years. I overdosed on Ibuprofen, wore every kind of strap, took as many as six months off, had cortisone shot after cortisone shot. At the end of the day, nothing worked.

I ended up having surgery on both elbows. Rehab was a bitch and took almost a full year after the first surgery for both of my elbows to be back to normal.

I now do strengthening exercises in the forearms to help the tendons deal with the weight. You also need to be careful when running Tren or Var or a substance that spikes your strength because increasing the weight of your lifts too quickly will put strain on your tendons.

Be careful. I was out of the gym for almost two full years if you count the time sorting out surgery and pissing around trying to deal with other remedies.

For me its a numb burning in the elbow and an extremely weak grip. Sucks because you cant do any pull exercises heavy. I dont think it ever heals just goes away until you aggravate it again. 600-800 milligrams of ibuprofen 3 times a day for a week, thats what the doc told me. But every time you lift in that period it inflames again. Has anyone had any benefit short or long term with tendinitis and deca added to cycle?

i'll get that after heavy bicep training, or back training when i really strain my grip. Usually goes away after a day, or two, at the most for myself
