Just curious how many of you have tried it? A younger guy at the gym, that I help out, got a grip tester. Oddly enough, I have the strongest grip in the gym so far (at the time I train). I haven't deadlifted in decades but I do have a strong hook grip for pulling exercises. Some of the biggest and strongest guys in the gym aren't even close to me. My best is 185.6. The closest one to me is 151.X.

Which one did you use though I was wondering if there is some kind of official COSC calibration or if they all read a little different

It wasn't anything like that. You see guys online, like Brian Shaw, using them.

I'd like to try one to see where I'm at. I have no clue why because he never did anything athletic but when I was little my dad had one of those grippers similar to Captains Of Crush and I remember it being quite a challenge to even move, much less close.

Never tried one. Never seen one. I suspect I wouldn’t fair very well.

Try a ‘dead hangs’, I can do 2 minutes last time I tried. Is it grip strength? I dunno. Perhaps it’s more endurance. But it’s hell on the forearms.

I used to do (there i go again, another has-been 😉) wrist curls on a bench, behind my back wrist curls then dead hangs. No test between exercises, three sets and I couldn’t pick a dime up off the floor after.

Haven't tried one, would be interesting to give it a whirl 🤔

Ironically enough...

I can tear an apple in half just with my hands. (True story.) Do it damn near every time when I eat an apple which is frequently. Did it today. I have no clue if it is hard for others to do but it impresses my wife so I keep doing it.

Had mine tested in pt back when i was having shoulder and elbow issues back in 2017. It was a caliper style thing that had a dial on it. I was in the high 160's with my good arm and 90's to start with the bad arm. Go the bad arm up into the low 140's. Which makes sense for how I felt leaving up to the injury. I finally broke down and started using straps for rack pull and heavy rows about a year ago.

I’ve tried the digital but I am
More of a fan of the captain crush.
I am at the 2.5 level.
I think if you can close a 3 you get your name in the books.

I’ve seen guys max out the digital but unable to close a 2.5.
My buddy Kyler actually has a ticTok where he has guys from the job sites test there strength. Gets a ton of hits

I too have the set of ,captains of crush by iron minds. I have 6 out of the 11, Not the whole set, bought starting at 80# to 195# I can barely close the 140# They start at 60# and end at 365#

I wrapped baseball bat tape on mine and its very nice, a little chalk and its pretty comfortable . You know those knurled handles can kinda hurt LOL

2.5 is impressive.
I have the two I can close which if memory serves requires 195lb of pressure. I also have a heavy grips 250 but I’m nowhere on that one.
I did purchase cheap used on eBay a gripper machine that you load plates on and squeeze the bottom bar to the top one. Forearm pump with a set of 20 is agony. I also do things now like thick rope climbs which also hammer forearms.
They do say that grip strength is a good measure of health as you age.

2.5 on the CoC is impressive. I can do a few reps with the 1.5 but have not yet ordered the 2.
To be honest ive let a ton of guys at the gym try the 1.5. Many of them verh big guys and almost no one is able to close is right away. Although it does take some getting used to and i believe theres a small bit of technique involved in terms of positioning your hand correctly. Most guys grab it and just squeeze and it barely moves. Then they readjust a few times and are able to get about half way.

Also, those fat gripz are pretty fun. Put them on barbell or dumbells to make everything the width of an axel bar. Ill put them om the barbell and just do static holds for 10 seconds and keep trying to add weight

This is the
1, 1.5, 2, 2.5

You would be surprised how
Many grown men can not close the #1

We always have guests and new hires give it a go.

I think only 3-4 people in the world have closed a number 4 ?

As of today, February 24, 2025, six people have officially closed the Captains of Crush #4 gripper under IronMind's certification rules. This gripper, rated at approximately 365 pounds of resistance, is considered one of the toughest hand strength challenges in the world.

The first five individuals certified were Joe Kinney (1998), Nathan Holle (2003), David Morton (2003), Tommy Heslep (2004), and Magnus Samuelsson (2004). These certifications occurred before IronMind introduced the "credit card rule" in March 2004, which requires the gripper handles to be set at least the width of a credit card (54 mm) apart before closing, making the feat even harder.

The sixth person, and the first to achieve this under the stricter credit card rule, is Carl Myerscough, certified in August 2023. His accomplishment marked a significant milestone, as no one had officially closed the #4 under these updated conditions until then.

So, to date, it’s six people total—five pre-rule change and one post-rule change. The rarity of this achievement underscores the extreme difficulty of the #4 gripper, even among elite strength athletes.

Lots of great grip strength.

Funny story.

Was in Joshua Tree NP about a month ago. My wife’s niece drove out from LA to see us. We all went on a hike to a palm oasis. We had some snacks when we’ve got there which included an apple. I tore it in half and gave her half. If she had known, she said she would have recorded it with her iPhone. Always a next time.

I need to work on my grip strength.

Can anyone recommend a good one to start with?

80lbs?
100lbs?
