The #1 Reason Why Bodybuilding Isn't Popular

Status
Not open for further replies.
It's a niche sport/interest. I was always intrigued growing up in the 90s about it. I would look at magazines, but never watched a full show.

It wasn't until I began to train myself that interest from a kid came back and I decided to get into it. Still, I don't watch the shows.

I use forums, podcasts, etc to learn and craft my skill. As someone else pointed out...this is BORING AF! But I LOVE IT!!! I am not normal.

Mainstream ppl just don't have the focus to get into a niche like this and so good luck getting ppl who don't train to wanna watch and get into it.

BB isn't normal, isn't mainstream. That is part of what drew me in. Fuck being normal!
Its not a sport though

One thing, out of the many, is…

It’s hard to appreciate when guys are SO “advanced” that it turns them into a useless human that only lives to eat, shit, and lift weights. It’s not sexually attractive, it’s not athletic, it’s not aesthetically attractive or artsy… you’re just a mystatin cow walking back and forth to the fridge for GH and meals of chicken and rice. It’s not very interesting or appealing to most people.

Being jacked is still popular, especially if you can move around, have a small waist, etc… but even bodybuilders barely keep interested in the sport (of competing). It’s an entirely selfish venture, not in the way of being an asshole, but in the way of accomplishing personal goals.

People can make money off the various entrepreneurial angles, but stage competitions will never ever be popular.

A female competitor I know is doing a pro show soon. Tickets are $80. All of her friends backed out from attending. What’s funny is, those seats would only be occupied for the moments before and during her stage appearance, so about 20-30 min? Mostly wait time? No thanks.

Being muscular and fit will always be popular, but as you lean towards the most extreme end of the spectrum, most ordinary people will drop off.

Good seeing you. This is such a great post. Each point above can be made i to a quote, especially the first one bolded.

Youre assuming anyone would even know his name. People want sports ie baseball football basketball.
Haha no, I saw it more along the lines of showing them pics of him. I know full well no one is going to know him 😉

I'm much the same, I like this sport because most people hate it lol

Ouchthathurts: you're a psychiatrist or were one right? What is my disorder called? 😊

Or do I fall under the general antisocial personality disorder category? 😭🤣

A psychiatrist is an MD. I was just a lowly peasant therapist. Very happily retired and managing a totally different type of portfolio now. But shooting from the hip, I'd say schizotypal personality disorder.

But if you have it, maybe we all do.

Remember when in 2004 the Mr. Olympia contest introduced a new Challenge Round to determine the final standings. The top six competitors' scores were discarded after round three, and only the final challenge round standings were used to decide the winner.

I think this was an attempt to increase the mainstream popularity of the show and bodybuilding in general. I don't think it was successful though.

Well, besides the point here I guess, but thanks for the work you did. I’ve mentioned it before here, but my therapist saved my life. Enjoy your retirement.

Initially I was shocked when I read the caption, but I quickly remembered 99.999999% of guys competing have no business sense or know-how for growing anything besides their muscles.

The Rock didn't become a star by keeping his mouth shut and respecting others. Neither did Steve Austin, John Cena, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, etc.

No bodybuilders cross over to mainstream because of this mentality. Everyone says shows need to give more prize more and get bigger sponsors, but you can't do that without growing the sport's popularity and creating true superstars. You don't do that by keeping your mouth shut.

It's so frustrating to see this, and even more frustrating to see the fans and competitors support it. As long as you want this to be a boring, respectful, stay-in-your-lane sport, don't complain about prize money, sponsorships, mainstream coverage, getting on ESPN, etc.

17 year old kids in China who literally just got a gym membership last month know who Chris Bumstead is. Bodybuilding is ridiculously popular.

I don’t think Americans care at all about steroids or unhealthy or any of that. Americans love to be entertained. Hence the aforementioned McGuire/Sosa chase, big hits in the NFL, etc.

Bodybuilding is flat out boring to watch. No one cares about the long game of years of training/diet. Just like no one cares about the careers of Olympic athletes. We watch swimming and track medal runs when Phelps and Bolt are in it. Or the big name womens gymnasts. No one knows Ramy or Walker just like they don’t know Dan Bell squats 1000lbs raw. Powerlifting is insanely boring to watch unless it’s a world record attempt from one of the super heavyweights.

This is also why muscular WWE is/was popular… great impressive physiques but they entertain viewers, draw them in and keep them coming back.

All boring to view sports will remain cult favorites in modern America where we want instant entertainment on our phones with 2min attention spans.

I would say Americans are into the shame game - steroids omg !!! If the news portrayed it as bad back in the day - which they did - it definitely left its mark - now a days people still heavily influenced ..but new generation is doing better with the BS detection from social/news

Eod - my body - my life - #$#% OFF !!

I don’t think it’s so much about steroids making it bad. It’s the freak status and getting so big to the point you look like an idiot. Doesn’t help bodybuilders are dying. So you spend most of your life killing yourself in the gym, taking steroids, weighing your food, getting on stage in a thong with men, ruining relationships because of selfishness. For most that will get you a few pics in your iPhone and a plastic trophy that sits in the basement. Most will look at that and laugh, pretty dumb to most of the population

bb'in isnt a sport. at all....its a hot body contest for muscle fetishists...vast majority of people dont care for that look. if they did, strippers would be jacked...porn actors would be jacked....but nope. its a fetish thing.
and guys are more impressed by muscle men that chicks are. gimme 5'10 205 at 10 percent bf at 52 years old over some a these juiced up dudes any day. at least i can find clothes that still fit. physique guys are way better lookin than 250+ pound guys on stage all day.
plus i could never be that big anyway but it aint sour grapes!

I usually agree with you Daniel but this time I can't 😝

BB'ING isn't popular because it never has been and because it never will be unless it goes back to natural status or a more natural status at the least.

Ask people on the street what they think of say a Nick Walker (or any one pro) and 99% of people is going to say "disgusting". At least 99 percent.

So people are never going to watch something like that, it's as simple as that.

Now don't ask me why something like wrestling IS popular in the US, I don't understand it neither 😂
Spot on.

The fact of the matter is most of the population is beyond pathetic in a million ways. They can't achieve much of anything because they have no discipline or work ethic, they drink most nights of the week (literally poisoning themselves for zero benefit) and they let others control their entire lives. So why would we care if "most of the population" deems anything pretty dumb?

I've never seen anyone so big they "look like an idiot" btw. That's an interesting and absurd statement.

To the first part I bolded;

Because those “dumb and pathetic alcoholics” are the ones who PAY…

Why does Conor make millions and millions per fight, even when on a losing streak? Because he sells the fight, and all those pathetic dummies PAY for the PPV’s..

That’s why bodybuilders should care, otherwise, they stop bitching that BBing isn’t popular and the prize money is dog shit..

Very few people make a comfortable living in the industry…

To the 2nd bolded part;

You must have not seen a BBer in regular clothes… Unless Nick Walker or Hunter Lebrada etc are in swim trunks on a beach or on stage, they look like morons walking down the street or at a nice restaurant or outing etc…

BBers love to mistake stares of aw and freak factor with someone enjoying what they’re seeing…

No one cares for more than 5 seconds and the whole 5 seconds 99% of people think it’s disgusting…

Also, it’s easy for a bunch of you who do this as a hobby to say “who cares if it’s mainstream, I love it.. Hardcore underground forever!” Blah Blah Blah..

Yea bro, you don’t make a living off this… It’s pretty sad to see someone put their health on the line for a BS $400k that’s really like $200k after taxes…

$200k to be the best in the world?? Lmfao… What a joke…

99% of people are either too timid or too lazy to make up their own mind about what is valuable or worthwhile.

Two reasons why bodybuilding isn't "popular"...

1. Why people don't WATCH it... We're oiled up muscle guys, flexing in almost no clothes... mainstream people have no interest in anything with such "prideful" undertones, no matter how woke the vocal minority claims to be.

2, Why people don't DO it... It's hard fu*king work. All day. Every day. In a society that's only gettin lazier, fatter, and more sedentary, why would any reasonable human expect our niche sport to actually GAIN popularity??? The math just isn't there.

True, and something that has always puzzled me immensely. From my point of view that weird lackadaisical attitude about most things in life is very strange. I was never like that even as a kid.
