So recently made a big decision with my life, changing employment fields entirely. Looking at getting back into the LE scene. All the departments I have applied to have ridiculous standards IE 1.5 miles in 16 minutes. You can walk that!

Recently got back into running though while training for these mini tests. Sitting right around 240 at 5'10 so its not the easiest on my body. And honestly I would be happy being a little leaner at 220.

For building cardiovascular health any routines you guys can suggest/point me in the right direction? This is a whole new ball game for me! I would like to be able and do 3 miles in 18 minutes and 5 in 35.

Fun getting good at something new again!

Im 5'10" 250 we cant run at this size we would need to seriously downgrade our weight training. Sounds like you have commited to a major change 40 yard dashes work then up it to 100 I have done that in the past but it compromises my weight training I can not find a balance.

Unfortunately if you want to be good at running, you hafta practice running!

Good luck to ya!!

Running is not a possibility for me, with a fused right ankle it just physically can't happen. But I would really rather stand my ground than run anyway...... :D

I will give you a running program if you answer all my stupid gun questions.

When I was your age I could run 3 in 18 and 5 in 35 no problem. But at 6 feet and 180lbs I was the incredible running hulk.

So pick between fast and a lean 220lbs. Methinks.

Secret to running

Thought I would share this:

Run man, there's literally no secret to this. Just fucking run.
I hate running more than anything. I have never been much of a runner at all. As an officer candidate, my initial PFT run (3 miles) was like 30 minutes and dying. What did I do? I just ran my nutsack into the ground. It sucks, but the more you do, the less it starts to suck. Rather quickly, I could run 3 miles in 21 minutes and feel pretty good.
30 days is a decent amount of time to at least get that score to where it needs to be to pass (you minimalist lazy shithead). Focus purely on endurance right now, not speed. In your initial training, speed will come naturally with endurance. Here's what I recommend -
Run every other day, for the next 4 weeks.
Week 1 - Run 1 mile, every other day, at a comfortable pace (for you, that's probably 10 minute miles)
Week 2 - Run 1.5 miles, every other day, at a decent pace (for you, that's probably 9 minute miles)
Week 3 - Run 2 miles, every other day, at a comfortable pace (again, 10 minute miles)
Week 4 - Run 2.5 miles, every other day, at a decent pace (9 minute miles)
This is a really basic plan, but it's designed to slowly build up your weekly mileage and endurance(with the 1.5 miler goal in mind). Once you're done with week 4, and you pass your IST (and you will if you follow this plan), keep doing this by upping your next week by half a mile. Do this until you reach 4 miles. At this point, you should be running 12-16 miles a week, with a decent base amount of endurance in you. Then you can start doing some speed work and really training for your actual PFT.
DON'T GO TO FUCKING BOOT CAMP WITH THE MENTALITY THAT IT WILL GET YOU IN SHAPE. YOU WILL SUFFER WAY MORE THAN YOU HAVE TO.
Don't miss a run, just go out and do it. Don't think about it while you're running. I find for me, that after 1-1.5 miles in, my body sort of goes on auto pilot and running becomes easy. At that point, I can run miles on end and it just feels the same.
While you're running, focus on controlling your breathing. Take nice deep breaths the moment you start running. It's called "pre-oxygenating", and it will allow your cardiovascular system to start delivering optimal amounts of oxygen to all muscles involved in your movements. This allows your body to sort of get ahead of the impeding shitsuck, and keeps you a hell of a lot less winded as you run.
As far as form goes, keep your head up at all times, even when you're tired. Try to relax your upper body as much as you can, and focus on just moving your legs. When you feel yourself really slowing down, and you want to maintain a fast pace, start pumping your arms a little bit because your legs will follow.
Nutrition is important, stop stuffing your cockhole with bacon cheeseburgers and lonely ass tv dinners. Eat a little cleaner. You can still indulge yourself, but within moderation. Drink less, and if you're a smoker, smoke less (or really just stop smoking or switch to chew).
Drink water, all day. Keeping yourself hydrated is so goddamn important that I want to punch you in the face just thinking about it.
Stretch lightly before your run if you want. Look up dynamic stretches in google, and do that. Definitely spend some time stretching AFTER your run. This is important, don't neglect this.
Now go out there, starting fucking today, and run. Keep in mind, the 1.5 mile IST run is fucking ten gallons of gayness. That's the same distance as the air force run. If you can't pass that, then that means you can't pass the easiest run requirements that the entire United States Military demands from it's recruits.
So knowing that you fucking suck right now, use that motivation to get out there and run. Marines didn't come out of the womb ready to bust out 300 PFTs (although some of them like to think they did), they worked at it. Put in your share.

Gradually build your way back into it. If your goal is to get down to a 6minute/mi that would be quite a task if you plan on maintaining your size. But its def reasonable to get your run time down to the 7-8min/mi within a month or two depending on your experience.

Somebody reads reddit.

I actually enjoy running... it makes me feel great mentally.
I can't keep any mass at all if I do though. I was preparing for a police academy a few years back, and was running 3 miles per day at a body weight of 220. I dropped to 190 very quickly, even though I was eating everything in sight.
I don't know how anyone stays big while running. I was getting killer shin splints too.
I wish there was a way for me to do it while retaining mass. My heart rate and BP were perfect when I was running.

you will drop muscle running hard regularly, but no thr cardio is as effective for getting in shape fast!

Hey Chris,
It depends on your personality, but just running will work. Have a goal of a time/distance to meet, plot it out reasonably on paper, and do it. If you miss a time, don't move to the next time/distance until you meet the last one.

I had to go from 240lbs and strong, to performance goals (rack pulls, pull ups, long assed runs, push ups, flutter kicks etc.) in a hurry at one point.

I didn't want to suck for months, as there was a hierarchy in the group and I was gonna be the new guy. So I just went all in before joining, ran till I felt really bad, puked, walked a minute ran some more. In a couple weeks, that fast, it seemed like I could run and run. Never had a problem after that staying with the group, but ended up around 190 several months later. This was years before AAS though and my diet was terrible.

Good luck, Chris!

hey bro a few people suggested you have to just run and i actually agree with that. im a army sgt and i run all the time and i know from experiance that people always improve after peroids of practice. i dont think you need a program other then stretching and trying to build on your best times and distances. good luck, don't forget to stretch and don't push it to hard in the beginning.

The longest of journeys starts with a single step.... So does running. Like anything you are not going to be great at it from the word go, but like bodybuilding you need to set yourself targets and acheive those targets. In my school days I used to be a state level middle and long distance runner. Anything over 1500 metres I did well at.
This might sound funny but I found that when I did distance running I would aim to get myself in a semi tranced like state, focusing on my breathing was paramount. This generally held off pain and the dredded stitches that come with distance. You have to get yourself to run through the stitches cause when you do you will get a second wind. Im not the fastest runner now days as I am alot heavier, but I can still run 1000metres in a bit under 2 and a half minutes. Im a bit lighter at 220lbs 12%bf but it is possible, just have to set the goals

I am 220 15%bf at 5'11". I run weekly as I enjoy running 5k, 4 mile, and 10K races. (after race parties are always loaded with women) To be able to run 3 miles in 18 mins. is flying. I only see skinny gazelle looking people run that! lol.
I would suggest, if you just started running, is to get some well padded shoes, not light shoes and get something that will measure your pace and work on steadily improving it. Anything in the 7-8 min range is awesome.

Like everybody else says, run your ass off.

Awesome! Thanks guys.

Any tricks for the knees? I've been running 2-3 times per week as of now. 1-2 miles each time. It really just depends on how my knees are feeling.

gotta wrap them knees. And only run on track, or treadmill. NEVER concrete.

Swim to rest your joints & deload. Running can hurt you bad if rushed. Mix in intervals, swimming, crossfit, ect. Boxing, kickboxing, Bike, stair mill, Walking, weight vest hikes....
Get a heart rate monitor to train at the right intensity. Go slow
