The Best Glute Kickback Machine I've Ever Used

I've always wanted to try the reverse hyper ever since I saw Louis simmons start talking about it. Seems like it would be a godsend machine for your glutes and lower back. Sadly Not many gyms seems to carry it, unless you go to a niche gym. None of the LA fitness/esportas near me have one unfortunately but they do have some shitty kickback machines=
You can have your own for well under $450 shipped.

thats very reasonable. I appreciate the link

I'm assuming its decently sturdy?

I would like to know what’s every one’s obsession now with directly training glutes now? I never saw the older generation ever directly training glutes
Well the ripped glute trend started around 1984 with Rich Gaspari but these days I think glute training has evolved due to increasing the strength and power of the glutes in addition to standard squats.

Hell yes. Weighs about 100 lbs. Also the scout can folded away to save space.

It will rock a bit so I put 2 80 lb dumbells on the front lower bar to help secure and it doesn't rise up.

You are so right about the Columbus gym scene!! I live in the area...been here since 1994. It was much better back in the day with the World Gym's (I think there were about 7 locations back then). I trained at the huge one up in Worthington where I'd regularly see Francois and JM Blakely. I'd also train at the one in Dublin off of Sawmill Rd. That was a good one too but it's gone now. Back then I was going back and forth between powerlifting and bodybuilding so those locations were well equipped for both! In the late 90's, my wife and I moved to Hilliard and I joined the Power Shack there at Mill Run...another good gym for powerlifting and bodybuilding. I think it's still there actually.

Starting in the early 2000's I bought a power rack and started training in my basement half the time. I loved it and made my mind up to start going in that direction more and more over time. A crazy thing happened in 2008 (housing bubble crash) and there were many gyms in the Columbus area that went out of business and had public auctions to sell their equipment. I went to a couple auctions at the Metro Fitness locations. Remember them? That's what the World Gyms changed their name to. I felt bad for them but it was a huge win for me! I bought so much stuff at those auctions for literally what amounted to pennies on the dollar! All of a sudden, I had a really nice, fully equipped home gym in my basement and I made the complete switch to home gym training full time and haven't looked back since!

Now, my wife and kids actually enjoy going to a gym instead of training in my awesome basement so we have a membership to the central Ohio YMCA's. Every once in a while, I go with them and just mess around on some machines and do some cardio and I'm quickly reminded why I love training at home!! I also travel a little bit for work and they pay for me to have a Planet Fitness membership because they have locations EVERYWHERE!!

But you're right....so many of the BEST facilities (Wenning, EliteFTS, Westside, etc.) are private/invitation only. I've been inside the EliteFTS gym and it's RIDICULOUS!! Didn't train there though. I was just out there cuz I bought a couple things from the EliteFTS store and wanted to save a little bit on shipping so I just drove out there to pick the stuff up. I started chatting Dave up and he took me over to the gym and showed me around. Pretty awesome place! I remember when he first started Elitefts and when you'd call there he actually answered the phone...lol.

Another cool story from back in the day: This was early 1995 and I had been in Columbus about 6 months. Like I said earlier, I was trying to get stronger in powerlifting and had a subscription to Powerlifting USA and was reading the articles Louie was writing about his conjugate system. He was selling VHS tapes of actual workouts at the time. I called the Westside phone number he had posted in his articles and damn if he didn't answer the phone!! I told him I wanted to buy a couple of his tapes and that I was local and would just come pick them up. He told me to meet him at the gym that evening and he'd have them there. This was back when Westside was on Demorest Ave. The OG, hard-core Westside with the windows painted black and where all of those tapes were filmed and where Dave, Chuck, Kenny Patterson, George Halbert, etc started coming up. So I meet Louie there and he has my tapes and I start asking him questions. Finally after about 10 minutes, Louie says "how about I just take you through a dynamic bench workout so you'll know what it's supposed to be like. He kicked my ass for 45 minutes but it's something I'll never forget!

I've never been there but I think American Barbell down in Canal Winchester on the southeast side of town is a really nice gym. That's where John Meadows trained a lot and where he filmed a lot of his YouTube stuff before he passed.
Dude! Thank you for sharing all that it was like a trip down memory lane! I used to train at that worlds (now called metrofitness). I trained there from like 2004 to 2015 or so then I moved over to the new albany area. I go there occasionally still. Great gym, old school feel to it. JM and Mike are still there and train folks there.

Again, thanks for sharing all that!

This is great. Appreciate the share. I used to read everything Louie wrote. Had his source books like Science and Practice etc. Had the VHS tapes as well and talked to him a few times. Great mind and thinker. Sucks he's not still with us. Had some friends that trained out there and even some of his old equipment (maybe his original or very early belt squat and bunch of RHs).

Where I'm at has a number of private gyms too. I have my own at home. Sure wish if had it when I was younger.

A good way to try it is buy a Rogue unit for your home. Resale value is great on Rogue gear so if it doesn't work out you won't lose much. I did this in my own home gym, later sold the Rogue unit for the big boy tilt top RH I have now.

Not sure on the scout version but the normal full size isn't too expensive either. I owned the original welded one. Basically rebuilt my back with it.

That's basically why Louie invented it, to fix his back after a bad lift and being told he wouldn't life again. He tells the whole story in the Westwide vs. The World Documentary.

No thanks. Merely doing squats and leg press make my ass huge. I stopped doing direct work on my glutes many years ago. I wish the rest of my body parts grew that easily....
We're not all blessed with huge glutes that respond jusyt from squating.

I would love to try it with both legs at the same time and unilateral. If it’s for sprinters it definitely has to fire those muscles. Nothing like that in Charlotte area that I’m aware of.

@Flex500 @samson516

Fellow columbus area guy here. I HIGHLY recommend the powershack gyms, any of them. Solid equipment and environment. JM used to train there now and then back in the day. When I lived downtown I started at Pros Gym and honestly I wasn’t a fan, eventually went down the street to Beyond Limits. Before that I was at the Worthington Metro which probably still is one of the better options too.

Here’s a similar workout from when I was in my best shape. I was only running
60 Test P/30 Mast P ED at this point in time. It was the first time in years I used sensible doses on a consistent schedule.

During this time I was extremely active working at a bakery plant 12 hour shifts, 2/5 days a week. Mental state was great, I didn’t touch AIs during this month. Weekly average caloric intake at this time was around 3500-4200 calories.

I typically don't care for glute kickback machines because at my size I can do the full stack plus 100lbs. with a GymPin and still knock out 15-20 reps. I do like glute bridges but I'm always trying to minimize spinal loading so it's not always in rotation.

Thursday was my birthday and I decided to hit Absolute Recomp for glutes & hamstrings because I knew it wouldn't be too crowded in the afternoon and they have tons of great leg equipment, most of it Panatta and some Arsenel - probably 10 leg presses, 10 different squat machines, standing (not kneeling) leg curls, etc.

This machine is called the Power Runner and I'm guessing it's for runners to train their legs for explosiveness. Panatta claims it's the first and only machine like it on the market. But if you do it unilaterally it really hits the glutes hard. As strong as I am with kickbacks I only went up to about 3 plates from the max for 10 reps. This was the first time I'd seen one and If you find one I highly recommend trying it. It even has separate weight stacks for each leg so if you have an injury or an imbalance you want to correct you can work around it.

That one works pretty good. They have more fun stuff at the Lewisville location though. You should try the Atlantis pendulum squat, by far the best pendulum ever created.

You can have your own for well under $450 shipped.
I got the Titan Rev-Hyper maybe 5+ yrs back. I use it after each session (4 to 5 times a week) just for 2 sets at a time.
Has really helped w/ my life-long back issues.

Between that, and using the belt-SQ in the corner (and not loading my spine w/ heavy BB SQ's very often),its made a huge difference.
Decompression...

Ive had a home-gym since 1978 when I started training (age 12) and of course its come a long way since.
I also loved commercial gyms for a long time, but these days I cannot stand to be in them. The broccoli-heads, flexers, filmers, etc.
And I get it, its just me (old), folks can do as they please. Nothing beats training in my home gym anyways, zero distractions.

Im moving to Tucson in a few days. Going to miss LVAC. I am planning on joining VASA gym in Tucson.
Hope your VASA is better than the one here in my town. The equipment is old and outdated, which I honestly don't mind as long it gets the job done. It's the massive crowd and clientele it brings with those cheap memberships. Numerous fights and actually a couple shootings. I pay a lot more at a different gym now, but I don't have to deal with any of that non sense anymore.

Holy shit, that's one awesome setup with practically any piece you'd find in a commercial gym right there. Also amazed how much equipment is in that space laid out quite well so well done. Agreed that having your own home gym is great aside from the expense of acquiring equipment. Did you acquire your equipment from supply houses or from gyms getting rid of stuff?

Thx man...

Most of my stuff I guess you could call "budget" equipment. Some just bought on Marketplace, some from Amazon, some I've just had for decades.
As mentioned, I started in 1978 with a cheap, flimsy flat-bench, two 110-lb sets, and a pulley in the ceiling of my parents house.
47 yrs later I have this, so it just evolved. cant see everything from the pics (view),but yes, I can basically do anything I need to do. (Smith-Machine, Leverage-Squat) etc...
