Personally, I don't think steroids or HGH are that dangerous.
Let's take a few examples from the pros, like Ronnie Coleman, who I think is the most impressive bodybuilder of all time. Apart from joint problems due to extreme weights, he hasn't had any other health issues that I know of.
Look at Jay Cutler, Phil Heath, Lee Haney, Dorian Yates, to name a few, they all seem to be doing well.
Tom Prince almost died from... ibuprofen! Even though he was taking huge doses of steroids, HGH, insulin...
Milo Sarcev, who abused steroids and cocaine quite a bit, was really going at it! He looks pretty good to me.
I personally knew an IFBB pro here in France, he was huge, 5'7" and 290 lbs.
He took between 3 and 4 grams of testosterone per week, 20iu of HGH per day, and insulin several times a day. Plus everything else that I don't know about.
What I also know is that he spent $6,000 a month on products, including dietary supplements, which gives you an idea of what he was putting into his body!
He's a doctor and earns over $20,000 a month. And he never had any blood tests. Today he's 50 years old and in good health. He hasn't had any problems as far as I know.
However, he did 1 hour of cardio a day and 2 hours in preparation for competitions.
No cigarettes, no alcohol, and no drugs like cocaine...
I also think that genetics play a big role. Some people are in great health, while others are very fragile.
You also need a bit of luck.
I also forgot to mention that diets, whether for weight gain or weight loss, are also very hard on the body.
With all that said, there are certainly quite a few bodybuilders who die, but there are also quite a few who are in very good health today.
