The Power of Mountains

I love everything Mountains. I love stories about people who get obsessed and die on them. I love Volcanoes! Still and peaceful for generations until sudde💥😵👋 🤷🏻‍♂️

I really like the Mountains of Tibet! The size and scale as incomprehensible to my small brain as the size and scale of the Ocean. The top might as well be the Moon or Mars I mean all 3 pretty much are in space right? I get a strange morbid motivation from watching videos like this for a few minutes at a time.

Man I had a long period where I binge watched and read everything about mountaineering. I get the allure.

I actually used to go into the mountains to hike in winter with a friend - all across europe. We didn't climb, but it was the closest thing to it basically. Several nights in a tent in freezing conditions in the mountains. I loved it, but I can't do it anymore with my bodyweight so high lol.

Bodybuilding attracts risk seekers and people with extreme tendencies I guess - there are some similarities

Alllways been fascinated by mountaineering and climbing. Just had a colleague at work climb Kilimanjaro and I picked her brain all day lol I’ve watched every documentary there is on that stuff. So cool. Also just seems like a “mental fortitude” type endeavor which is just badass to me as well.

I’ve seen a few Everest documentaries that were interesting. It’s definitely an intense sport/endeavor.

A lot of people have died or gotten frostbite and had to get limbs amputated trying to get to the top of Everest (and with the altitude 99.99% of people need pressurized oxygen so they don’t black out)

Then there’s the Sherpa people who are genetically conditioned for those higher altitudes and dont even need oxygen, and do the climb while carrying supplies for the rest of the group on their back and make it look easy

Yea those Sherpas are bad asses.

I live right in the heart of Appalachia and am surrounded by mountains. Not like the ones in Tibet but still cool. I lived almost half my life on the coast and ideally want to spend fall and winter there. Spring and summer in the mountains.

Ditto, born and raised. Weekend getaways and vacations to any big cities makes me appreciate the peace and quiet the mountains bring

I hiked/climbed with a buddy for a few years that taught mountaineering, did search and rescue, climbed the tallest mountains on 3 continents, trained some navy seals on Denali. He would tell me that over 20,000 feet when you are in the death zone the mountains don't look so pretty. And when you get to the top you look around quickly and want to go down. Laying in your tent for a week waiting for the weather to break while your heart is beating 120 bpm trying to stay alive and not being able to digest food in not as romantic as it seems. It is about the journey he would say and no view is worth what it takes to get to the top.
My personal experience is that carrying a 50+ pound pack up the side of a mountain can take the charm out of climbing.
I still find mountains beautiful. But try to find very short ones these years and with as little to no gear as i think i can get away with for my day in the mountains. Being above tree line can be very freeing.

i love the mountains to the point that i figured thats where i will take my last breath one day, started off climbing some 13ers and 14ers in states, with a lot of ice and rock day climbs in-between trips, wanted to get a taste of altitude so went to mexico and climbed Orizaba, left sea level and was on summit i think it was 4 days later, hard push, then went to Ecuador a couple of times, been to Peru 3 times [climbed Huascaran N, Chopicalqui, Tocllaraju, yanapaccha, pisco and a couple more, had to attempt Huascaran 3 times before making summit, have not been there since 2023 but would like to go back once more, honestly not sure i can suffer like i use to, lol, been doing smaller peaks and hiking now days, damn body is just not holding up but would like one more trip to the Big Peaks.

I was going to mention Appalachia as a favorite subject of mine! I’d love to talk Appalachia (and Popcorn Sutton RIP)
14 peaks and free solo on Netflix were good watches. I think there was a other one I saw but forgot the name.
I recommend the movie Everest (2015) with Jason Clark & Josh Brolin + All Star Cast. It’s a true story (May, 1996 disaster). If you want bone chilling real life and death on a mountain look on YouTube for the free K1 disaster documentary. (NSFW). Video clips of climbers from high above sliding past climbers below them and past them flailing to grab something. Sliding down out of view into oblivion. Yeah! The interviews are creepy because everyone who was involved has that 1000 mile stare of people who looked into the Abyss and saw what was down there!
Free Solo was wild.
I never needed a Benzo more than I did trying to watch it! 🫨

Do you’ve actually lived it! Awesome @buck

i get it, i have carried heavy packs on smaller climbs, on bigger peaks i skinned down as much as possible, but say a 35# pack is going to get heavy once i break 17k feet, i learned long ago that big peak climbing comes down to how much you can suffer, i been out with some guys that were in great shape, but would say fuck it and turn back, even tho you can train up your mental ability i think a lot of that is you have it or you dont, i live at sea level and for me i adapt/acclimatize well to altitude, i had one trip in which i pushed to fast, the main thing was i could not sleep, i was about to throw in the towel and finally fell out on the 3rd day for a few hours.

Actually just put this on after seeing you recommend it.

It’s been very good so far! Definitely appreciate the suggestion.

Climbing a vertical cliff/mountain with no rope is pretty gnarly

There is a follow up one made a few years later too. I don’t know the name.

I highly recommend Touching The Void if you have never seen it. Its been at least 17 years since I saw it so im not sure how well it would hold up, but I remember it being really good.
