The Thinking Bodybuilder's Toolbox for health.(bp,cholesterol, heart, kidney, liver)

Whats covered? Fiber and B vitamins?

All your vitamins mineral and antioxidants. The ones you've listed in their natural state. Plus others like vitamin K and B17.
if you find your diet lacks certain things its better to supplement than go without.

Ill still take fish oil an d3 on days I'm not outside much.
And I take a lot of herbal supplements for health as well.

I got a teeter to do inversions due to low back pumps. Seems to help a bit but could be the overall feeling of relieving tension in the area.

How is your bp? Taking any ai's?

Sorry I think I need a translator.... teeter to do inversions... wth does this mean?

BP always low and 12.5mg/day aromasin.... but no better under any AI or without. Thanks

Perhaps he is talking about the device that rotates to allow you to hang upside-down.

I just took a glance back at page 7... and noticed many people asking or subscribing about cholesterol/lipids.

I adopted part of this from Alpha.

2-3grams EPA/DHA a day
1 Avocado daily
1/3cup unroasted unsalted almonds

Personally I add to this 1-3tbsp coconut oil(virgin, unrefined)
IForce Heart Help if you're impatient with the above or need extra support.

Lastly, Niacin(regular full flush) but I really doubt you will ever have to go this far with what is listed above.

As for Tudca, I looks like a badass! I will use it during orals for liver health and it also seems to have some lipid supporting characteristics.
For now, due to concern about NAC turning pro oxidant, I have elected to take 600mg 3x daily instead of 2400mg total in one or two doses.

I am quite frustrated and annoyed at the fact I have been taking NOW SUPER ODORLESS GARLIC which also has hawthorn berry, hawthorn extract, and cayenne. All seem to be in very.small amounts that aren't really near optimal. WHY?! These kind of things drive me insane when I cannot make sense of what the formulators were thinking.
Either that or I have my lines crossed somewhere. If anyone knows a lot about garlic supplementation please chime in. From what I can find, 600-1200mg a day is optimal. Why do these damn caps contain 50mg!?

garlic can be have the opposite ( sort of ) effect at higher doing. it can be poisoness, not like in a way to kill you but not the effect you want. ill see if i can dig up where i got that from, i know you like details...

the only thing i can think of off the top of my head for the hawthorn is some type of digestive aid. prob more for sales then effect?

Now Super Odorless Garlic: per cap

Odorless Garlic(allium sativum)(Bulb) 50mg
Hawthorn extract 100mg
Hawthorn berry 250mg
Cayenne Pepper 100mg

Even at 2caps daily which is suggested it seems less than optimal. They claim its a synergystic blend..

various pepper extracts and such have all kinds of interesting things from anti bacterial/microbial to thinning blood, I would think that could help deliver some precieved benniffit over just the garlic.

the others I think are more for digestion but there have been a few studies on hawthorn and circulation/heart stuff. along similar lines to garlic.

Most supp manufacturers just produce lousy supps because they know the general public wont bother to read studies showing that the great things they tout come at 5 or 10 the dose they provide.

They just ride the media wave saying so and so has shown to help with cancer or help with brain fog or whatever.

I say this all the time to people.

My own dad takes 1 fish oil cap per day because it says so on the bottle. It gives minute amounts of actual dha or efa.

I think I calculated that he would have to take 12 or more caps to reach 2-3 grams

This is a perfect example of how they sell. A basic consumer ends up wasting 20 a month and sees no results.

Very true. At least in my experience, I respect a company that comes somewhere close. But to get 600-1200mg of garlic...theres no way Im taking 12-24 caps. :naughty: I swear I must be missing something somewhere...

For that to be a good sup you would have to take 4 pills 2-3 times a day. I don't trust oderless garlic to do the same thing. I eat or juice one clove of garlic and take 1500 mg Hawthorn berry. My BP is 120/60

when ON I'll shoot up to 145/90 quickly without above.

What I feel is most important:

Throughout my research I have personally strived to create an order of importance. There is a SUPER SIX that I refer to and advocate should be staples...and then theres a few more that round out the top 10.
I see #7,#8, and #9 as basically interchangeable as far as importance. Some people are going to think B vitamins are more important than ALA or Magnesium and vice-versa.

Here they are.

1) Vitamind D3 (25 hydroxy levels of 60-80ng)
2) EPA/DHA 2-3g daily
3) Astaxanthin 4-16mg daily
4) Ubiquinol 100-500mg daily
5) Curcumin BCM-95 / Theracurmin (unsure which is best but good options)
6) Tocotrienols 30-50mg daily :Jarrow Toco-Sorb or Famile(full spectrum)

7) Magnesium 450mg daily from a ZMA supp or by itself
8) B Vitamins + C Low dose(co-factor preferred), VitC 2-3g daily
9) ALA 300-1200mg daily :GDA and anti-oxidant
10)NAC 1800-2400mg split up 600mg at a time

Not far behind and totally worthy of mention.

NAC, Garlic, Methylcobalamin, Baby Aspirin, ACV, Cinnamon, Selenium, IP6 Lycomato, Green Tea Extract, Rhodiola Rosea

Looking into Humanofort and Fulvic Acid.

Most of the rest mentioned in this thread I have pretty much discarded as far as super important...just my opinion due to countless hours of being a nerd about this stuff. :)

Red Palm Oil

"The benefits of red palm oil to health include a reduction in the risk of arterial thrombosis and/or atherosclerosis, inhibition of endogenous cholesterol biosynthesis, platelet aggregation, a reduction in oxidative stress and a reduction in blood pressure. It has also been shown that dietary red palm oil, taken in moderation in animals and humans, promotes the efficient utilisation of nutrients, activates hepatic drug metabolising enzymes, facilitates the haemoglobinisation of red blood cells and improves immune function. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the nutritional, physiological and biochemical roles of red palm oil in improving wellbeing and quality of life."

Red palm oil: nutritional, physiological and... [Br J Biomed Sci. 2009] - PubMed - NCBI

Worth baring the below in mind regarding oxidised red palm oil...so be aware of which form you get...Shelby, if you use red palm oil...would you count it in as your daily fat intake to??

The benefits of palm oil to health include reduction in risk of arterial thrombosis and atherosclerosis, inhibition of endogenous cholesterol biosynthesis, platelet aggregation, and reduction in blood pressure. Palm oil has been used in the fresh state and/or at various levels of oxidation. Oxidation is a result of processing the oil for various culinary purposes. However, a considerable amount of the commonly used palm oil is in the oxidized state, which poses potential dangers to the biochemical and physiological functions of the body. Unlike fresh palm oil, oxidized palm oil induces an adverse lipid profile, reproductive toxicity and toxicity of the kidney, lung, liver, and heart. This may be as a result of the generation of toxicants brought on by oxidation. In contrast to oxidized palm oil, red or refined palm oil at moderate levels in the diet of experimental animals promotes efficient utilization of nutrients, favorable body weight gains, induction of hepatic drug metabolizing enzymes, adequate hemoglobinization of red cells and improvement of immune function. However, high palm oil levels in the diet induce toxicity to the liver as shown by loss of cellular radial architecture and cell size reductions which are corroborated by alanine transaminase to asparate transaminase ratios which are higher than unity. The consumtion of moderate amounts of palm oil and reduction in the level of oxidation may reduce the health risk believed to be associated with the consumption of palm oil. Red palm oil, by virtue of its beta-carotene content, may protect against vitamin A deficiency and certain forms of cancer.

When micronutrients are ingested in the natural form, they are absorbed slowly. When taken in supplement form, they are digested rapidly and this can be a hard on the kidneys. I'm not doubting the positive effects of most of these supplements IF someone is not eating a proper diet. However if someone is eating a proper diet, I think it would be unwise to risk all that kidney stress, and I don't think there is any benefit to most micronutrients if you eat balanced diet.

There are other issues as well, take aspirin for example, while you see a decrease in clotting related stroke, you also see an increase in hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding stroke). So if you have perfectly healthy blood readings, you probably shouldn't take aspirin.

Take vitamin D, great supplement if you don't get enough naturally, but if you do, why risk taking supplemental vitamin D? Too much vitamin D is hard on the kidneys and can cause elevated calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia). Calcification of soft plaque on the arteries is the main cause of heart disease. This is a reason NOT to take supplemental calcium also. The head cardiologist at UCSD recommends AGAINST taking supplemental calcium for both men AND women (surprising for women especially). Low HDL, high LDL and high calcium is a recipe for long term heart disease.

Several B vitamins are nephrotoxic, neurotoxic, or hepatotoxic at higher doses.

Vitamin C, which everyone thinks is so safe, has several possible toxic effects, the least of which is greatly increasing iron absorption- not something someone who already has a problem with a high RBC would want.

Saw Palmetto, which has a VERY low bioavailablity, is a mild 5ARI if megadosed, we know of all sorts of negative effects related to 5ARIs.

If you eat a healthy diet, you get LOADS of every vitamin. Use a program like NutritionData to see the exact amounts, if you are deficient on one or more, supplement that exact one in reasonable doses, not mega doses.

Typically for a heavy hard training bodybuilder our bloods are out in relation to various things in comparison to a couch potato.I had my yearly wellmans check a few year ago a day after a heavy leg day by chance and my bloods showed i had chronic kidney failure...yeh really. I forget name of enzyme that showed up at massive amounts. Doctor admitted it also shows up due to heavy training etc...ie muscle damage...But still they sent me for kidney tests....ALL GOOD!!!!

However, the kidney specialist advised me to STOP taking Vitamin C and Vitamin D3.....as stressed kidneys....same with drinking 4litres of water daily.
I asked about steroids...obviously didnt advocate their use....but had no actual knowledge of them...but admitted she didnt see it a concern to kidneys like she did the vitamins..

Lmao then she has no ideas
Vitamin D3 you need a hefty everyday like 15000iu over several month to get any issue even then it won't be dangerous just get your level tested if you can it's worth it! And blood pressure/water retention are the first and worst side effect of steroids for kidney so she really has no idea
