Thick back

Do deads work? Yeah for some people.. are they needed to build a great back?.. no.. no movment is needed.. no one needs to bench press for a great chest.. if you anatomically not suited for a movement then you are wasting your time and might be setting yourself up to injury.. many great backs don't deadlift.. many great chests don't barbell bench press..
I used to like rack deads.. felt them greatly in my traps .. Dr told me once I has degenerative discs in my low back.. stopped doing them and went to shrugs.. traps didn't suffer and I could rolloveer in bed with screaming once again..

So as I stated some love them and get great progress from them.. but some of the best backs around don't do them.. try them out.. if you don't like them don't do them..

I agree with Lats. Try the movement out and discard what doesn't feel right.

Personally I think my body is structurally built for dead lifts and rack pulls.

Concerning back only, high rep rack pulls that more resemble a Romanian deadlift seem to fill my upper/lower traps with blood, and pump my rhomboids like nothing else. From there I really like a hammer row one arm at a time where I can really stretch and contract the muscle. I always make it a point to keep my scapula retracted, and try to pinch my shoulder blades together while pulling through my elbows.

Just copy a Dorian workout, make a few adjustments to fit you and you're gold.

Here is me & JJB1 with our weighted helmets! Prolly the best device for building a thick back. That's me on the right check out that upper back development.

From phil: I'll do deads for video stuff etc, and we did them during sports training.
But they don't do much for back development.
I see him at least 4x a week.

without being taken out of context, Phil heath wouldnt be high on my list of people I listen to for training advice.
He grows muscle sitting in his car on the way to the gym.

Look at a few less genetically gifted people who have got some big backs on them and most will have deads in their arsenal (and for good reason)

I simply mean he doesnt do them. As well as most pros don't.

I was looking for the reply from @b-boy and @Phidias

Lee Haney didn't do deadlifts (except for the stiff legged variety for hamstrings with around 200lbs.) from what I understand and is considered to have one of the best backs of all time.

my opinion

Without being argumentative or personal (I think you know
that), your example proves absolutely nothing. They are
probably also doing squats and perhaps, unsupported rows
or other things that stimulate their back. Point is ya just
don’t know.

Understanding the effectiveness of certain exercises can
often be misleading when or while other factors are in
place. Sometimes it becomes a process of elimination
which most people are unwilling to do as the ‘more is
better’ philosophy tends to dominate the field of
bodybuilding.

If you took away the deads would their back shrink? It’s
only when you start eliminating or adding variables
(i.e., exercises) are you then truly able to track the pluses
and minuses of an exercise, the before and after’s.

At least that is my reasoning / opinion, for what little it
is worth . . .

I do agree with your position regarding the genetically
gifted though :)

You don’t ask a race horse how to train a race horse ;)

mostly rowing bb db some dead and pull-up with various grip

...but what about erectors and the famous christmas tree?

I also do weighted chins and good mornings for the lower back.I never do the same movements 2 weeks in a row for any bodypart.

I always find it stupid when guys state you must do one particular exercise to develop certain muscles. You can go without any one exercise. It's about finding what works for you. Everyone is built differently or could be training through different injuries. To say you can't grow a thick back without deadlifts is stupid especially when there are many similar exercises.

T-Bar Row
Rack Pulls
Barbell Row
Deadlifts
etc

My personal favourite for sheer thickness would probably be t-bar rows.

Are deadlifts required for a great back? No. Do powerlifters and strongman have thick backs? Yes. If you think that all powerlifters and strongmen are fat, you’re fucking retarded.

What’s the point of building a thick back if it’s not also strong as fuck? Nothing will build that strength like a deadlift. Also, people have an un-natural fear of being injured or re-injured deadlifting. Most of the people I come into contact with who “injured” themselves deadlifting never did any prehab/mobility work. It’s more of a case of not properly working on mobility combined with trying to deadlift heavy or fatigued. I’d say barbell bench press is far more dangerous than deadlifts, and is almost a pointless exercise. At least dead lifts can carry over to real life scenarios.

Last, just because the big pro bodybuilders don’t currently deadlift, doesn’t mean they never did them. You can’t look at their current training and say since they don’t do deadlifts now, they never did them. I’m willing to bet most of them with great backs deadlifted heavy at one time leading up to their current condition.

And this is my pic, while training strongman. I also hold 4 American powerlifting records. Notice I’m not fat.
