I dont live in the greatest neighborhood, and I'm away from my family alot w/ work. We've had a lot of break ins around the neighborhood and a couple shootings recently. I have guns in my house but I figured one of the best defenses would be a bigger dog. I'm looking into the Cane Corso breed. They look pretty sweet, and I've researched a little on them and most of what I've read says they're good with kids. Not the type of dogs to look for a fight, but wont back down from one. Also, not the type of dogs to wonder off, they stay close to home and they're owners. Would this be a good dog for a wife w/ a kid on the way?

I have a C Corso. He is very high energy but not aggressive at all. Good and friendly with kids. But hes got that look (people often mistake him for a pitbull) that does welfor security presence. Also youre right if shit hits the fan they will go 120%. They are known to have some of the strongest bites/jaws lb for lb, i know this from playing tug o ware with a rope

Well I just met with the breeder and looked at some, I think I'm going to give him my deposit this week on one of the males. It's a blue brindle, the father and mother were on site. THis is my first time seeing one of these dogs in person, and holy shit!!! These things are huge. They seemed to have a great temperament too, I was playing with the father of the litter and I could tell it was a great dog. He stood up on his rear legs and that dog was taller than me, I swear. He was 140 lbs, the things head was huge. NOBODY would come in my yard if that thing was out there, you'd have to have a death wish. So I'm pretty hyped about it.

Thats cuzz it is....

The Cane Corso aka Italian Mastiff is the grandfather of the pitbull breed. This is the bloodline that Pitbulls were dervived from. I believe this is also part of the bloodline of rottwielers. They are beautiful dogs, i looked into getting one as well. To pricey. LOL. If you crop there ears they look exactly like a huge ass pitbull. I hate that people even use the word pitbull. There are about 20 different breeds that all fall into the classification of a pitbull. Which most people veiw in a negative light....unfortunately. Me personaly have always had American Staffordshire terriers. Some of the smartest most loyal animals you will ever meet. Its all in how you raise em. I could make a Pomeranian mean if i tryed.

According to the breeder they will not affect your homeowners insurance like a pit, rott, or doberman. Good with kids too. Yes, they are extremely expensive. I'm lucky because the dude is cutting me a break and giving me mine for a $1000, and its a blue brindle too. The father is about 140 lbs, I'm sure this one will get pretty good sized. Here is a pic of what it's going to look like after about a year or so.

hes only 5 months in that pic. His parents were 85 lbs. The thing is hes so low to the ground, he looks huge!

Beautiful looking dogs.

About a year ago, there was a woman that was killed in her yard by her Cane Corso. From all accounts, it was a good dog that was raised around her kids, not aggressive or anything like that.

Sorry, it was a Presa Canario that killed the woman. Here's the link to the article.

Presas, Tosas, and trained-pits are not for families or those who dont know how to handle them.

I love Canes, but really all Molosser's.

will you be keeping it inside? just keep in mind a huge dog inside can be a pill. If you want a good dog with kids that looks mean but is small check out a staffordshire bull terrier. They fall under the bully breed umbrella so they are called pits by some morons that don't know any better. I've had 2 of these dogs and I have 2 kids, one being only 18 months old. The staffy is very gentle with both of my kids. They are muscular dogs and dont realize it sometimes though and will knock you around. Just throwing an idea out there for you.

good luck

most of the mastiff dogs are good with kids...they were breed to protect for centuries....at one time our childern were our most inportant things...they will be more inclined to watch over the family than a big screen tv or 22' rims...all dogs need to be socialized with kids to be good with them. I have 2 pits a pressa and a fila...i have freinds ith boerboels and corso's all great dogs around kids....not so much with strange men...but this is how we trained them (exept for the fila i only taught him to let go)
