This years Olympia top 4 compared to 2010 Arnold..in your estimation

IMO they blow the old generation out of the water conditioning wise as a whole. Striated glutes werent common now they are required. Yes there are outliers like Ronnie but he's an outlier on everything lol.

There were amazing bodybuilders then. And there are amazing bodybuilders now. It was a blast watching Sosa and McGuire chase the home run record and it is awesome to see Shohei and Judge blasting bombs too. No reason to compare just recognize greatness in both generations.
Stick to powerlifting is obvious you have no clue on bodybuilding

The details and lines with the older school bodybuilding were inarguably way better

And phil heath is probably one of the most genetically gifted bodybuilders of all time.

I don’t think the genetics nowadays are necessarily worse, the judging criteria and the protocols the athletes need to run to win are just different.

I laugh when people compare any current top bodybuilder with Ronnie, Phil and Flex like they are just the average top level guys of yesteryear all three are widely considered as genetically the best of all time that’s like comparing Keone with Ben Pakulski to argue today’s bodybuilders are better

I have no horse in the race but if you’re going to argue something do it without bias as it’s pointless

I'm comparing Mr Olympia to Mr.Olympia... I think that's fair 🤔

Hey I prefer the physiques of the past and agree they appear to be better but we can all find ways to make our point appear valid

TBH I think Yates looks much better here. And he's not my favorite "classic" Mr. O.

All personal preferences of course, but this photo also illustrates my "Derek Tofu" thought. He looks hard yet soft from the front here especially.
Arms, chest, shoulders, all one smooth mass.

Yeah I agree. Derek definitely doesn’t match up front to back somehow in terms of that “look”. Immensely impressive physique and his taper and musculature most definitely has the “wow that is insane” effect but is missing that special something I think that other top guys have had

Again I do prefer the physiques of years gone personally my whole point was and not necessarily aimed at any post in here but I see people using pics of Phil to compare against random pro’s of today to say how bad it’s supposedly gotten and it’s like come on Phil isn’t a generalised example of all pro’s of the 2000’s he’s genetically probably the best of all time

Yes, for sure.
If we limit this conversation to the top 5 I think across decades those guys have always been something special.
Things fall off quickly once you leave that group - no shame on the guys who don't make it.

Phil is one of the best ever, but I don't think Derek matches:
Haney / Yates / Ronnie / Jay / Dex / Shaun / etc. Brandon maybe, same for Big Ramy. Hadi as well - amazing, but doesn't stand out in a historical lineup IMHO.

I agree I wonder if Dorian, but more so Ronnie and Phil set the bar so high like a once in a generation type deal that it could be sometime until we see anything close to them

Top 5-10 in that mid to late 90’s also all some of the GOAT’s all in one era and lineup

I’ve heard it suggested that these guys who posses that level of potential are doing classic instead so we aren’t seeing them in open which speaking in regards to UK amateur bodybuilding does seem to be true maybe it’s cause the % of guys doing classic is way higher than those doing open or it just really rewards those with the best genetics as size isn’t a card you can overly play

However I don’t see anyone on the radar at the mr Olympia open class currently who could enter that GOAT category…big statement
I know and I may well be wrong

It’s actually very strange we don’t see more freaks coming into the sport given the popularity of weight training and PEDs. You would think there would be many young freaks even surpassing the 90s guys who looked insane at a young age such as Jay, branch, lee, flex, Shawn.
I don’t really buy the classic argument as I am not seeing a crazy level of young talent there either.

It's true, it's impossible for genes favoring bodybuilding (predominance of fast-twitch muscle fibers, muscle shape, good skeletal structure, immune system, and all the rest) to suddenly disappear over the course of 30 years. I'd most likely look for such genes in black athletes. It's probably a lack of true passion and willingness to work hard among the younger generation; everyone wants everything at once, and that's just not possible.

What’s weird to me is the leg shape on these modern guys like Nick & Derek. They have massive adductors but comparatively small quads. I much prefer the 90s shape
Isn't it weird as the years go on we see much less quad sweep and the super dense quads we used to see?

I always thought it was down to people using less range of motion and too much reliance on 'easier machines' could be completely wrong though! Just what I've seen from watching people train.
I hate to sound like an old man with these statements but I believe this as well..because what else has changed? We used to get told squat ass to the grass...bury everything...train legs HARD. We rarely see guys going all out on legs (except Hadi lol). Leg training used to be the day that revealed the mice from men haha

We cant say its to much cardio because guys are doing much less these days for the most part across the board.

There must be something to it!

I'm not saying I have a great quad sweep. But I do have one and I didn't do anything other than ass to grass squats and full depth leg press. As deep as I possibly could. Didn't use other machines or even leg extension until recently.

I think people just don't train truly as hard! And also their ego stops them from using proper form and keeping constant tension on the right muscles just so they can use more weight. I was deffo guilty of this myself and since leaving the ego at the door I made much better progress
