To all the kids who survived the 1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's, and 70's

To some of our younger members, this may be lost, but
to somebody in his mid 50's (like me), it resonates clearly.

Can't take credit for writing this, but thought it worth passing along, enjoy . . .

First, we survived being born to mothers: some smoked
and-or drank while they were Pregnant. Many took aspirin,
ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get
tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our
tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored
lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on
doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had
baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no
car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags,
bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day
was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle
and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon.

We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar and, we
weren't overweight.

WHY?

Because we were always outside playing . . . that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot
the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we
learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes.
There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's,
no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and
no chat rooms.

WE HAD FRIENDS

And we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth
And there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the
worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made
up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although
we were told it would happen, we did not put out very
many eyes..

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked
in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made
the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal
with disappointment. Imagine that!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law
was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation
and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and
responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them?

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had
the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the
government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know
how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

This post brought a smile to my face

So true. I did just about all this stuff! (never had to post bail) :D Great memories. Great post!

Dead on! Modernization rears it's ugly head! Good post bro!

As always..priceless.....reading this, I was thinking, YES!!! THAT WAS ME TOO:)

I was allover the place and as a girl...I was never home, didnt watch tv. I walked or rode my bike everywhere, for miles!!! for real in the rain or snow..didnt care, we all did it...I cut throught the woods, day or night, fell out of trees...and survived it all:eek:

I like this one, thanks.

Excellent Read, Thanks Alfesco

Oh the memories from a 46 year old

Home made tree houses - built only by kids
No sun block
Skateboarding and bike riding over jumps made from old plywood laid over cinder blocks
Dialing the fucking zero on an old fashioned phone
Swimming in polluted lakes catching frogs and turtles with no adults around
Mischief night
Actually calling an adult Mr or Mrs
Air raid drills in the class room where we hid under our desks just in case the Soviets dropped the bomb
Life wasn't over if you didn't get into your first choice college

Yes! I remember having bottle rocket wars with my cousin around the 4th of July. We would shoot them AT each other. And I still have both my eyes!

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great post and brings back tons of memories.

I kind of thought of this all yesterday when trying to drive by a bus stop and twenty cars(parents) sit there plugging up traffic til the bus comes. These kids are in middle school and I live in A GATED NEIGHBORHOOD! All applying hand sanitizer real quick to junior before he runs to the bus, lol.

My daughters Elementary school stopped having honor roll breakfasts this year because other parents complained their kids felt left out! well they could study hard and be a part? earn something! i could go on for days, lol.

Good post

I made a bottle rocket shooter in 8th grade metal shop for my open project!lol.

They would never allow that today.

OMG Your parents actually spaked you

Yea when I was twelve I accidently shot a shot gun off in the house. :eek:I knew I was getting the belt when my father got home. Never once crossed my mind to call child protective services. Don't think they had that back then.

.

More like tore my Ice up, bro! Thang was, we had bushes (dry, this was in the middle July in the south) all along side of the house. It happened to hit next to my mom and dads bedroom window. Ole pops was in watching t.v.. All of sudden he sees flames shooting up along side of his window *LOL*.

I was so stunned, I just stood there with candle in hand, and the look a dear gets on his/her face when you shine em. Good ole days! *LOL*

LOL, Yeah we used roman candles too with metal trash can lids at shields! I wish I could go back and relive those days, I had a blast! Nobody ever got hurt really. We burned down a bush once playing with gasoline, but we put out the fire!

The whole helmet thing is a bit annoying. You cant even see a kid these days using a scooter without a helmet. Although I have to admit that most of them are motorized and go 20 mph!! LOL Lazy kids.

Say what you want there's something to be said for riding down the street in moms car standing on the front seat.when she would stop she would just put her arm out to stop you from hitting the dash. but kids had a lot more respect for people back then with the thought you would get your ass whooped.if you didn't.

I will bring up a memory most of you old timers can relate with. Remember when you were in school and were bad? The teacher would take you out in the hallway or send you to the Principal's office. They would pull out that big wooden paddle with holes, tell you to bend over and hit you hard with both hands. Isn't that child abuse now a days or something you can get arrested for?

Well, I used to teach high school and one of the schools I taught at still let the teachers paddle. An old timer in the room next to me lit up one boy's ass in the hallway one day. You could hear the smack inside my room with the door closed! WIth every smack the entire class groaned! I personally never had to go that far. Most schools dont allow it now, but I wish they still did.

Yes. I did have a couple of those in my years. It stung!!!! My parents would smack my butt with a belt and my grandmother used the fly-swatter :D People didn't thing a thing about that in those days.

Mature Muscle, when you said stand in the seat of the car, that reminded me of my earliest memory as a kid. I remember standing between my parents in the seat of our pick-up truck on the way to the drive-in movie. I remember my mom asking me if I wanted a baby sister. That would have put me about 3 years old.

Anybody remember the playgrounds in front of the movie screen at the drive-in? We would play on those things until dark, then the movie would start. First you walked over to the food stand and loaded up on burgers and fries though.
