Tom Platz - Why your max doesn't matter

A powerlifter who has never been introduced to bodybuilding trains to be the strongest one rep squater in the world. After years of training with the sole purpose of maxing out, he ends up the best of the best. Then he gets the stupid and crazy idea that he wants to do a bodybuilding show. He cuts down to low bf percentage and his legs end up MORE developed than Platz.

Pure conjecture.:naughty:

Your assertion is that there is a one to one correlation between strength and size. This untrue. There are people who are strong as an ox but do not have superior development (Johhny Jackson, while good, is no Tom Platz). Conversely, there are bodybuilders who are huge and strength is very moderate.

Yes, he is the real deal. I have met him, been to a seminar of his, and watched him train in LA prior
to the 81 Olympia when he was at his biggest and his best. (Sadly, he did not do legs.) I have never
seen anybody train harder than Tom. And I have seen a lot of pro bodybuilders train when training
was considered a much more important part of the equation.

It is my understanding that Tom did not increase his steroid dosages to get to his biggest in 1981.
(His steroid use is well documented and was really not that much in comparison . . .) What he mainly
did was increase his calories. And that is from the horse’s mouth.

FYI . . . there may be a biography on Tom’s life in the works.

The bottom line, he was built to squat. But . . . not all people can or are willing to squat like him,
even if their life depended on it. He has a combination of great ankle flexibility and very favorable
bodily proportions (by his own admission, which are genetic and not subject to change) and when
you couple that with a willingness and a determination to work unbelievably hard in conjunction
with the appropriate ‘supplementation’ for him, you get a true freak. Many can and do duplicate
what he did, but few will equal the physical development of his legs and calves.

Agree completely. I know many extremely strong competitive power lifters that just look like your average semi muscular gym goer. On the other hand some of the biggest most muscular people I know, have trained with, and talked to use way less weight than powerlifters and almost never max out. Maxing out when it comes to bodybuilding is worthless besides trying to pump up ones ego. Strength does not equate to size.

I remember watching videos of him working out. Mentally insane while training. And then watching him on an interview. Was 2 dif people. During interviews, he was so calm, soft spoken, funny and to the point. And most everything he said, he would try to get it across in an educational way for the listeners. Great respect for the guy. A true lover of the sport.
