I had my tonsils taken out when I was 30 yrs old as well and was definitely painful as an adult and took 2+ weeks before I fully recovered and felt like I had my voice back.
The liquid pain meds only lasted 3 hours for me, so the last hour before I could take more pain meds was always painful. The doctor prescribed a pain med sucker to be used if needed as well, but the damn thing just numbed the mouth and had no effect on the actual pin from the tonsillectomy.
Also you have to be very careful on what you eat and slowly introduce solid foods upon recovery.
