When do people find it necassary to get the help from a trainer? Also, for people that have had trainers do you find it hard to work with people via email?

Just curious because I'm considering getting some help for a show I plan on doing.

PS- my stats are 20 years old, 226 pounds, 5'8 1/2, 12% bodyfat maybe less.... I don't think the stats were really needed, just trying to give a rough idea of where i'm at.

Well, this is a better question

I just started with a trainer about a month ago, don't find it difficult at all to work and corresponde thru email with a trainer,as a matter fact the trainers on here will allow you to have access to advanced knowledge and not limit you to your local area, only thing is you will have to be self motivated ( and it seems you are ),just stick to and follow their plan, there are some great trainers on here Phil being one of them,Shelby,Alex A and a few more just cant think of their names or handles right now.

I dont think there is ever the right/correct time to learn something new.

If i could afford to i would spend 6 months to a year with as many people as i could because they all have something different to give being there own experiences/knowledge and own methods.

For me it was primarily a piece of mind thing. I am attempting to diet down to a leanness I've never been to before and don't need to wrack my brain anymore with questions like "Am I going too fast?" "Are my carbs too low?" "What sort of cardio/supps/whatever should I use?"

I've got my plan and just have to execute and report back weekly(or sooner if I have questions) to Shelby. He's not there to baby sit me, it's up to me to get up and get on that treadmill or pack all my meals for the day.

I like that scott, thanks for that! Those are the same questions I ask myself all the time. But I was just thinking since I'm younger I should try to learn my body the best I can before bringing in someone to help, because who knows how long I could have them for..

We will see, I have like 18 more weeks until I would start dieting if I chose to.

Get this......

I have been lifting weights half my life, had some Great trainers and I've always learned something from them.....

Well I learned something new from my new trainer that has me shocked.

I was always taught to use full ROM to stimulate muscle growth.

Well my new trainer says....go 80% of your ROM....I was like....who is this fool telling me 80% not 100% like many of us do.

Started doing 80% of my ROM to failure......I have had some of the best pumps I ever had in all these Yrs of training.

Who said thay cant teach an old dog new tricks :)

Forgive my ignorance but what does ROM stand for?

Forgive my ignorance but what does ROM stand for?

Read-only memory (usually known by its acronym, ROM) is a class of storage media used in computers and other electronic devices. Because data stored in ROM cannot be modified (at least not very quickly or easily), it is mainly used to distribute firmware (software that is very closely tied to specific hardware, and unlikely to require frequent updates)

In its strictest sense, ROM refers only to mask ROM (the oldest type of solid state ROM), which is fabricated with the desired data permanently stored in it, and thus can never be modified. However, more modern types such as EPROM and flash EEPROM can be erased and re-programmed multiple times; they are still described as "read-only memory"(ROM) because the reprogramming process is generally infrequent, comparatively slow, and often does not permit random access writes to individual memory locations. Despite the simplicity of mask ROM, economies of scale and field-programmability often make reprogrammable technologies more flexible and inexpensive, so mask ROM is rarely used in new products as of 2007[update].

Just kidding :D RANGE OF MOTION :)

So a pump is what you look for in a routine? I agree about the shorter ROM but not for the pump, to keep the main muscles, not secondaries, under tension longer. TUT is key.

Yep. I was the same way too. I actually had to drop the weight I was using on my set by almost 5% too. I was surprised that it was harder work to do it this way. I think the main factor is the fact that you keep constant tension on the muscles and they never have a chance to rest. When you go full range, you get a short rest at the top of the motion. this is especially true in something like squats.

Yeah, doing your negatives nice and slow really blasts the muscles.

LMMFAO!!!! That was good Bro. Yes it really means Range of Motion, in the BB'ing world. :)

TUT

Time under Tension is not a measuring stick I would go by.........time? Time in the concentric stroke? Time in the eccentric stroke? The time difference under these circumstances is VERY different....time is only 1 part of T(e+c)w=A A pump, the good old fashioned kind , is a INDICATOR of great insulin sensitivity and growth response......

So if I do a set of 8 with 1 sec conc, 4 sec ecc and I dont get a good pump, would you say that wasnt a good set? Or if I do 30 reps in the 80% range, with constant tenstion, and get a huge pump, is that better? Or are we looking for a happy medium?

Should we be striving for a pump each time? I find that I get a greater pump with more reps and less eccentric time.

Missing the point

We can drown ourselves in numbers all night, that was not my point. My point is that a good pump is a great INDICATOR of high insulin sensitivity and growth......so with that being said, a decent "pump" with workout A is not as positive compared to a fantastic " pump" with the same workout A....so how do we get to fantastic? IT does not necessarily happen ONLY in the gym, it happens out of the gym.........diet/supplementation/rest. IT is all encompassing..........so do not stress over 8 seconds and 1 second and 4 seconds and TUT vs reps, etc..

Mmm. Good post Phil. I feel the "pump" is largely diet/rest related.

I want to try this 80% ROM technique though. I've been using slow, perfect form/ROM for a long time now. Maybe I'll switch it up to explosive/faster reps at 80% ROM, see what happens.

I can tell you what will happen............you will grow bigger muscles ,burn more fat, and have a healthy appetite.
