Training abs, who does not?

Do you train abs/core directly?

  • Yes. The same as I do quadriceps. With resistance and intensly.

  • No. Compound lifts are plenty.

1-2 sets after my leg workout, leg raises or crunches...then again i always do some kind of vacuum exercises at least twice a week, often more...i actually think they're more important than regular ab work for your physical appearance...functional strength i don't give a shit about :D

with a descent diet ( many proportioned meals) and training properly my abs look great and I never train them.

I train abs directly but not obliques. I'm concerned that as the obliques become larger they will give my physique a more squared look.

I'll be honest, the only muscle group I loathe training is abdominals.

So I found a way to cheat and still get decent results.

Any exercise I can do standing, I do standing.

I use bodyweight exercises with added weight as often as possible.

I never wear a belt for squats, deads, military, or anything.

I try to keep the abs contracted during any lift. And last but not least if I want to show abs I just drop calories for a few weeks.

you couldnt have said it better.... Abs are partially genetic I believe. You really cant BUILD big muscle bellies in your Abs can you?

My abs double in size if training them heavy.
A look I like better than small abs.
Intercostals also look better a bit larger than normal.
Too bad my Obliqus have grown also, but from 30yrs of shoveling, swinging sledge hammers and wheel barreling Concrete they had no choice.
The good is the power in your Punch and you should see me hit a Ball!!!

I never train abs and i purposely wear a belt during most exercises to keep waist size under control. Supposedly it can help atrophy the area and the last thing i need is larger obliques. My abs still look pretty good when conditioned and my waist never gets over 35 inches even when 260 plus pounds

I just posted this in the other ab thread but you want your abs strong to hold up heavy weights in the squat and other compound movements. I never understood not training them. I have big abs but noticed higher rep training didn't really increase growth but kept them conditioned and strong. Your whole core ties into your abs and I don't want any weak links in my body.

I too Carrie a 35" waist @ 260.
I got a lot more hip development from squatting 600lbs then anything.
Gonna definitely try the Vacumm hold. I remember doing those as a kid and my waist would almost disappear.lol
Currently I'm happy to breathe without abb pain and soon may be able to clear my thought.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. I like doing hanging leg raises and ab wheel exercises. As long as I don't go heavy or use added weight I really only see an increase in hardness and definition.

Finally having Sex again after my surgery.
Great Abb workout.

Old thread reborn! I like it!
I never saw my abs like I wanted no matter how lean I was until, I did them with heavy resistance at least once a week. I like doing heavy rope crunches for 10-12 reps only. I go up till the plates weigh more than I do so I can't hold the rope down anymore lol. Then I would do some light high volume reps same day. No side bends as my oblique's are too thick already from 20 years of powerlifting.

I start training them about two months before our summer holiday to coincide with cutting. Should do once a week at least really
