Hello guys,

i am a bit down right now.
I am just coming back from the MRT and my worst case fear is true - i have ruptured my triceps tendon.
it must have happened 6-7 weeks ago and had to wait until today for the MRT.
rupture of triceps tendon at the enthesis of the tendon. retraction of 1,9cm, local hematoma.
further tendinous and ligamentous structures intact

any experiences how to proceed?
is surgery still an option after this time?

There’s that one guy here who just tore his tricep I believe 🤔

Other than that, I imagine your medical professionals will know better than anyone here

@Bbuildersteve had surgery like 2 weeks ago on his tricep.

Myself had a tricep rupture last year. Muscle not completely torn of from the tendon, still attached for a bit. Tendon itself had a 5cm rupture towards the elbow bone, but no retraction of the tendon. My surgeon advised at the time to not have surgery as it’s very difficult to attach the muscle back to the tendon. Tendon to the bone is very easy he said, so in that case I was even more unlucky. I started bpc-157 and tb500 and after 2 months I was lifting again with that arm. Light weights though :).

Cause you do have a retraction of the tendon I would discuss it with your surgeon, as it can look funny once recovered. I don’t know about function though. For me I have full function back again, just with heavier push exercises my elbow hurts a tiny bit.

the medical professionals here are a joke unfortunately. I assume i can find more experiences here on the board.
but of course i have to get some opinions of the orthos here

so you had a ruptured tendon and a muscle tear?

Yep. Muscle partially torn of the tendon and tendon had a 5cm rupture through the middle.
and you can do pressing movements etc again?
(no 1 rep max of course)

Yes. Some exercises I avoid, like dumbbell presses and skull crushers. I hit chest today and just did 4 plate incline chest press for 3 sets of 13-15 reps. I started dumbbell fly’s again like 5 weeks ago and that felt weird even with 18kg dumbbells, but I haven’t done that exercise since the injury last year November. But now I’m up to 30kg again and feeling almost normal. If I haven’t done certain exercises for a while the tricep muscle doesn’t seem adjusted to that tension yet, as if it needs to ‘learn’ again.

okay. this gives me some hope that if OP is not possible anymore i can still press in future again :D

@M@NU, why not travel outside your immediate living area? I get living in a rural area and being limited. If you’re serious though about getting close to 100% again I’d make the long drive if though it’s an inconvenience. Best of luck to you on your recovery!!! I know it sucks!

i will definitely do that for the surgery if it is possible.
There is a good ortho clinic around 160km away that i would want to use.
But i would first like to know if surgery is even an option at this point.

Yes! Have the surgery ASP!

For sure 160 KM is insignificant if a good and more desirable Ortho Clinic is within your preference limit.

Do you have a picture what it looks like now? Can you train triceps ?

I tore the long head of my tricep near my elbow in 2018

I also had bad elbow bursitis but kept pushing through it

Did not have surgery. Made a solid recovery, visible slightly near my elbow but I can train the tricep no problem and does not affect my pressing

I’m not 100% but I think you can still get the surgery depending how much the tendon has already retracted. Why did you have to wait so long to get imaging?

currently the pain is getting less day by day and i can train triceps / chest presses with light weight.
i have also talked to my physio today who works at a clinic and she asked the chief doctor of ortohpedia.
he told her its strange that i can still press and extend against resistance, even if it is light weight. A complete rupture shouldnt allow that.
I have a ortho appointment tomorrow morning, i hope the ortho can read the mrt pictures :D
i can make a picture, the pointy area of the elbow is slightly swollen. Apart from that, my triceps is still visible if i flex it
