A trip and a half

Some of you know but for those that didn't. This was to be an epic voyage which was sheduled to traverse aprox 1/3 of the australian coastline from northeast to southern tip. it was cut short due to many problems with the boat.

You know we do so many things in our lives but few would compare to something like this. Even though I did not get to complete the voyage, well short in fact it was an experience of a lifetime. The kind of experience that changes your perspective of things, changes your views and changes you! You encounter challenges that, depending on your decision could mean life or death, success or failure. The weather was pretty bad for the most part, compound this with fuel consumption issues and the relaying of wrong information and you have the maklings of a real train wreck. The advantage of being on a sailing vessel is you have alternative means of mobility. The dangers are real and your decisions make up the outcome of returning home safe or being lost forever in high seas. I was faced with some of these moments and am happy to say I am here safe and sound. Funny thing is while all this is going on around you, you are not preoccupied with the thought of danger but more like how the hell are we going to get out of this.

Now don't get me wrong, I have said to one of our bros, i am no hero man and yes i was scared. When you have up 16 foot of waves coming at you side on and it is breaking at the top, you tend to get worried. Now a normal boat would have been done for in those circumstances but with about 6 ton of lead slung on the bottom of your boat you generally will not roll. It still gets you though as the boat heels way over and then drops down the back of that wave, only to be greeted by another one of equal magnitude. As you punch through the water just covers the bow of the boat and you are in for a soaking. Now it is summer here but that water in the open ocean, about 230kms offshore was f'ing cold!! Yes with wet weather gear on you still get wet.
It is good to back on dry land. I will relay some more experiences and troubles in another thread. Hope you enjoy and i can say it was a blast. I learned more about myself in those ten days and what I can and cannot do! A real eye opener. As I call it, I was so humbled by mother nature it was scary!!

great pics as always, your story had me on the edge of my seat glad everything worked out!

Don't they say there's no age to learn? ;)

You're right looking at it this way... instead of what, in the end, would have been remembered as no more than a quiet little cruise under the sun (even if it would have surely made for a great photo album to show kids in your retirement days ;) ), you have experienced something REALLY unforgettable... which, as you said, was well worth the pain. :)

Now back to the gym and its damn members annoying you all day long with their stupid questions :p

Beautiful pics OF. Can't wait to see the rest of them.

Especially the one where you're being towed back to the gas refill station! bahahaha j/k :p

i can relate to the weather situation old. i worked on a fishing boat for 5 years and we went out in about 15 ft seas and thats some scary shit. when that bow slams down it hurts all over lol

nice pics by the way

Awesome pics OF. It looks like you at least had some breaks in the weather! Beautiful shots! I love the water too. There is something about it that that calms the soul. But that beauty has the capacity to turn really scary too. I am sure it was quite an experience. I bet when your life looked to be on the "edge" out there, it enhanced your appreciation of what is "ordinary living" on the land.

Sounds like an awesome adventure! Glad that you're back on Terra Firma again.

that would be an awesome experience.. I don't get out enough, I love nature and this Earth we have, but with my lifestyle I rarely get to see it. I need a vacation!

Great pics. :) Did you get sea sick at all? :D

Thank-you for sharing OF, i love the nature pics.......Between you and JT, we can make a calendar, or postcard biz...
Keep having fun, thats what this is all about..

HAHAHAHA nope I don't but my crew was. Chucked up all over the helm one of em did. I made them get a bucket and clean that mess up before I would go near the wheel. I was laughing my ass off!!

Just another reason why dairy products and rough seas don't mix. All I could smell was partly fermented chocolate milk up on deck. No mistake about the smell so i went up to see. LOL

Very Nice

Wish I was there hanging out with you.

Oh yeah!....... I can smell it now....... the salty sea air and fermented chocolate milk. Heeeeyyyyy! Was Marshall on that boat???? :D :D :D Were they drinking that because chocolate milk is a damn good recovery drink?

Must have been incredible OF!
I was in the Whitsundays last October, and it was just incredible. I stayed in Airlie Beach for four days and took a catamaran out to White Haven Beach and surrounding areas, went for a scuba dive.
I too was caught in some of that nasty weather and know that I was a bit worried, but it was only for 45 minutes so I can only imagine what you must have been going through!

Did you do any training at all while you were here? If so what gym did you go to? Mine is in Cannonvale which is 5 mins from airlie on the road in. You would have gone past it to get to airlie.

No, no training, it was my honeymoon.
But we got plenty of cardio everyday with all of the walking we did while we were in Sydney and up in Airlie.
Best time of our live, especially the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb!
