2,4,6-Tribromoanisole: Behind the Tylenol Recall
McNeil Consumer Healthcare reveals that an uncharacteristic musty smell led to the initial -- and now expanded - product recall. Reports of nausea, vomiting, stomach pains and diarrhea were eventually traced back to 2,4,6-tribromoanisole, a metabolite of a chemical fungicide associated with the treatment of wood used in pallets. These pallets, in turn, were used to transport the packaging materials that would later be used for bottling the Tylenol caplets.
According to the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2,4,6-tribromoanisole is high on the list of probable mustiness causing agents that taint packaged foods. It is interesting to note that an interaction of the fungus Paecilomyces variotii with the fungicide 2,4,6-tribromophenol leads to the creation of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. McNeil Consumer Healthcare advises that all the complaints it received pointed to a short-lived discomfort but acknowledges that the effects of this metabolite on the human organism have not been fully studied.
