type of doctor for reading thyroid chart/meds?

Endocrinologists

They are the speciality you should ask. Off course they are likely to be very conservative. Like, you are taking AAS? You are an idiot. :)

seems there is a large range that is considered "normal" when it comes to thyroid testing. my question is is there a specific "type" of doctor that would be more accurate than others at reading your bloodwork to determine dosage necessary? ie sports doctor vs family doctor ect.

if you are asking with a wink, then the answer is sports doc.

If you are asking as a civilian, you want an endocrinologist.

Actually, a sports medicine doctor specializes in sports related injuries etc...They don't and won't prescribe anything to enhance performance.

An HRT or longevity clinic is wink wink.

And yes Endocrinologists are responsible for tougher cases of thyroid issues that the G.P./internist feels needs attention from a specialist.

HRT is good too, but wont work for someone in his twenties. Many (not all) sports docs get with the program for competitive reasons. I've known a few to prescribe hGH or oxandrin for connective tissue injury repair enhancement however documented

I wasn't suggesting he go on HRT in his twenties. My wink wink was in response to the above poster giving a wink wink about Sports docs(which was way off base). longevity, wellness and HRT clinics will prescribe things outside the realm of medical indication and at much higher doses.

I refer patients who have sports related injuries(IF I believe we are looking at surgery) to an orthapedic clinic with sports medicine doctors all the time.I have heard of the practice of healing hormones but, haven't had had a single patient come back after surgery on this type of regemine.

I havent really found anyone worth my time yet. there are so many MD endo out here I dont know who would be a good one that wouldnt just treat me like joe schmoe. a buddy recommended an naturapath(sp?) that could write a script if needed and may be better than an MD. hell im kinda stumped.

A naturopath cannot write scripts. They will have you walking out of their office with $200.00 worth of homeopathic crap.

All you need is bloodwork from your doctor. He will decide which thyroid tests you need as there are several. The range is right on his chart when the test is returned.

But to answer your original question : This is under the specialty of an Endocrinologist as they are the most trained and deal with this daily.

An endocrenologist- period. There is nothing i repeat nothing they have not seen. Sports doctor- are you kidding? Any doc you go to will immediatly refer you to an endo so dont waste your time or money anywhere else. Good luck bro and be honest with specific issues so you may receive a proper diagnosis.

Best bet is to find a DO who specializes in sports medicine and HRT. They will take care of you;)

Maybe he meant DO not ND. Like already stated ND cant write scripts.

While it would make sense that an endocrinologist would be most knowledgeable in this area, my experience with patients I've recommended to them have been horrid. I would recommend finding a physician that is either certified with A4M(american academy of anti-aging medicine) or a member of ACAM(american college for advancement in medicine). They can be found at worldhealth.net and acamnet.org respectively and have a database of physicians that you can search by city, zip code, etc... Most of the physicians with these organizations will be more knowledgeable in this type of arena and more liberal with the scripts for helping you out. When it comes to thyroid the blood work can help guide you but you really need to treat the patient and not the numbers. In other words, just because you may have numbers in the low normal range you may also have classic symptoms and normal for you may need to be higher. Most of the A4M and ACAM docs tend to think outside the box and will take this into account. Hope this helps.

Problem is they aren't in patients network plans and they are very expensive and cash only. They won't even assist patients filing insurance etc...

So essentially your paying out the ass for these liberal scripts.I have to disagree about them being more knowlegable.
Have you researched some of the HRT clinics? ever read the background on the history or specialties of these "liberal prescribing " docs? They are practicing outside the scope of their education most of the time.

OK that settles it then, nevermind.

and re the HRT clinic, they wont generally prescribe for a 20-something is the point.

True as some won't even schedule a male patient under 30 years old.

You are correct, they normally don't take insurance and so you have to pay their consultation fees; however usually the blood work and scripts are covered under insurance. So after the initial exam the fees are pretty minimal.
