UFC: never hearing about or seeing injuries?

I will say im not the most informed or experienced person in regards to MMA, but one thing i could never understand. These guys are lethal weapons. Hit harder than baseball bats. Are stronger than heck. ...

Why is there never injuries on UFC ppv events or Pride? Iv yet to see someone carried off the mat...unable to stand after 10min....broken bones...etc.... You would think being hit by one of these guys would cause SERIOUS SERIOUS damage. I sure as hell wouldnt be willing to take a hit from one of them. Can someone explain this to me?

There have been injuries Sylvia v. Mir, Karo's tooth flying out of his mouth, quite a few in Pride, etc... but I think it is probably a combination of things: 1) proactive refereeing, and 2) luck. They stop stuff pretty quickly in the UFC. But, as you pointed out, the risk is always there for something much worse to happen.

The UFC has done a heck of a good job getting rid of dangerous moves that cause a lot of damage. In some of the other federations where the rules are more lax, there is more bodily harm.

But I'm sure one of these days we will see something horrific. It just hasn't happened yet.

They say MMA is less dangerous than boxing because your not getting hit on the head as regular. Its safer than American football or Rugby because you dont have a few 300Ib guys jump on you and boot you on the head. Its safer than motor sports. Alot has gone on to make MMA safe, and if you fight MMA and worst come worst, your openents got you on a lock you can always tap out.

i agree with what grumpy said...

i trained for some time in similar styles of fighting in preparation to compete and one of the major things stressed was defense, such as the proper way to fall, how to exhale when you hit the ground, ways to prevent injuries, etc.

the possibility for injury is MASSIVE...everytime someone gets an arm bar or a knee bar...they could easily just snap it. why not? because they have enough respect for the other fighters. they each know their own strenghts and abilities and hav no desire to hurt the other fighters (well except for BBJ who i think tries to kill everyone :p )

taking a hit is not that bad. honestly TP...im sure you could take one and not die lol. getting knocked out is only momentary and the on site medical staff is well prepared.

the sport is much safer than a lot of others...especially boxing

im sure we'll eventually see some injuries...probably serious ones...probably during an intense, heated rivalry where one of the guys goes for an arm or knee bar too intensely...

i just hope the american public is ready

TP4U...u r out of it? why do they not get hurt? b/c its fake just like wrestling! DUH! LOL

A lot of semi-major injuries are masked by adrenaline. Ever wake up the day after a fight (or just training) and think how the **** did I hurt that?

Another thing to consider is the fact that they do not have a match every week like football does. THere is plenty of time before fights for R&R and, therefore, most of they're injuries have time to heal during that time and you don't here abotu them at the time of the fight b/c they are a part of the past.

Saw a rerun of one of Wandy Silva's fights just a bit ago...He pretty much picked the dude up and through him and broke the guys collar bone...You coould see the bone moving under the skin...

yep

You are precisely right -- as a matter of fact I have personally seen MANY injuries in the dressing rooms -- after the fight is when the injuries become apparent, I fought a guy who broke his foot early in the fight -- but went for two rounds, then after the fight he noticed it was swelling up and it was broken and it was bad. I have seen countless broken ribs, back injuries, knee and ankle injuries, beleive me they happen A LOT.

Hella Swole: actually fighters RARELY have time to heal and recover -- the training for the fights is almost worse than the fight itself! After two years of fighting my body was getting trashed and it was mostly from practice.

i cant remember who dan henderson was fighting for the life of me....but he came in with both ankles wrapped. he ended up breaking both during the fight...but just kept going. i want to say it was against couture....but i honestly cant remember.

Come on, you even don't know that a martial artist must practice being beaten everyday? Their bones and soft tissues are much stronger than us.

Agreed, just like they're way conditioned to take punches to the head or where ever...A similar hard blow once to an uncondtioned person will lay him down and/or out:eek:

Not really clear what you're saying, but Hendo definitely never fought Couture. They are very good friends and trained together until recently.

most fighters probably break their hands and several bones in their feet whenever they fight. I know I always destroy my foot and if you go to the ground the odds are good you could have some joint damage.

But as far as serious injuries I would think the most dangerous thing is getting too many concussions. They stop the fights pretty quickly now and without the big boxing gloves people are KO'd rather easily which is better than getting punched 200 times like is boxing

then i really just dont remember who it was. but i was just trying to show that they do come in expecting injuries and the adrenaline during the fight allows them to continue..whoever it was broke both of henderson's ankles...yet he could still stand and still fought.

thats heart.

Same here. I get hurt in training why more then I ever do in a fight.
