Umbilical Hernia Surgery

So I managed to give myself a small umbilical hernia about 6 weeks ago. I didn't feel it at the time, but it probably happened when I was using the hack squat slead. I saw a doc and he just said to keep an eye on it, which I have done, and it's getting worse and I can only assume that will continue until I end up with this big old thing sticking out of my belly button, so I've decided to have it surgically repaired and am consulting with a surgeon tomorrow.

The surgery itself is pretty minor. They stuff it back inside and patch your abs with some mesh. What kills me -- and I know you guys can relate -- is the downtime post op. I'm just wrapping up an 18 week EQ and Var cycle too, and I'm feeling great, and I'm looking at the surgery coinciding with my PCT, which is going to suck.

So for those of you who have had an umbilical hernia repaired, how long before you could really start lifting again? And is it really the same afterwards, or does it hurt? And do you have a little voice in your head that keeps you from going all out because you're worried about the hernia coming back? I'm 42, so I'm not a kid, but I've managed to avoid major injuries so far and I'm worried that this will take away one of the few things in my life that I currently feel good about. :(

If you've gone through this, please share your experiences with me!

Thanks

Good luck and I hope surgery goes well. For your cycle, I would say play it by ear, start your pct heavy so at least you recover well and consider ostarine for recovery. I used it to avoid surgery on my shoulder, it's a great healer.

I had a double hernia surgery in June of '08. It was a laparoscopic surgery, a small incision at each hernia about an inch or less. I was in and out the same day. Took about 6 weeks to recover to eight lifting, but I was jogging every morning around week 3/4. There is no pain now. For awhile the scar would itch, and from time to time the spot would be a dull ache, but that's about it. Good luck. Pm me if you have anymore questions

I had an umbilical hernia repaired along with 3 other minor hernias at the same time. The surgeon told me no lifting for one month but i was doing cardio within 3 days and lifting heavy after 9 days. Stick to isolation movements and mostly machines. Wear a lifting belt backwards with the fat part directly over your abdomen and wrap a towel around it to keep pressure on the wound. My doctor told he to stay on AAS and HGH to speed up healing. I would also recommend 5mg TB-500 and 5mg BPC-157 injected subcutaneously weekly for accelerated systemic healing. Eat very nutrition foods with lots of good healthy fats.
You will find healing is very fast. I told my surgeon I couldn't have any visible scars due to bodybuilding competition. He did an amazing job. My surgeon had a son that competed so he was very familiar and accepting of AAS use. I'm pretty sure he was on test. Had great vascularity for a 65 year old. ;)

I would say just listen to your body, and ease into things. Everybody can be so different on how they recover, but if you make sure to stay away from anything that could aggravate it I'm sure you will be ok. For recovery purposes, I would just stay in your cycle. Good luck to you

Best of luck good friend, my prayers are with you.I never had these type of operations, so i cant add feedback to the subject and i hate to parrot info i read on the internet with no 1st hand experience.

I have a small one I got from deadlifting about 5 years ago. it hasn't gotten worse so I haven't had it treated but when the time comes you have to accept taking time off... your entire body will thank you for the break and I promise you will come back stronger than before and fresh.

Had umbilical surgery in 2001. Doc recommend no heavy lifting for 4 weeks.
First week was rough but after the second week things improved and I started cardio. Waited until the third week to start lifting.

I'm having mine in Nov. just sick of the outie.
3-4 weeks and like JJ said peps, and an abb belt plus hrt.
Wanted to wait till after concrete and boardshort season to were a break will be nice anyway.

Thank you brothers for all the advice and encouragement! :headbang:
My wife and "normal" friends don't really understand that I'm not worried about the surgery itself, but about the prospect of having to go weeks without lifting and losing the gains I've made while on cycle. I know you guys all get it though!

I met with the surgeon yesterday at a hernia specialist place, and he said it was so small that he'd need to make a bigger hole to insert the mesh, so he's just going to push my "outie" back in, and stitch up the hole in my abs with a slowly dissolving suture, and then use a quick absorbing suture to close up my skin. It's small enough so that he's not going to do it laparoscopically, but just make a single incision just above the naval. He also said, "the only reason you're even noticing this is because you're in such great shape." So I guess I could just spend a few weeks on the couch chugging beers and eating pizza and it would disappear, right? :D

Now THAT is my kind of doctor! I just took my last shot of EQ -- I've got none left and my sponsor (Lightning Fast) has had to close up shop. I've got 3 weeks of Anavar left as well as enough test prop to last that long. I'm looking at having the surgery next week because my wife is changing jobs and we'll be losing our insurance for a while. So I'll be on Var and low dose Test P when I have it done and for about 10 days afterwards. I hope that will speed the healing.

I recently started researching peptides but don't know much about them and get a lot of conflicting information. I'll definitely look into TB-500 and BPC-157 though. Anything that will help heal sounds awesome! Thanks!

Good luck on the surgery!!

Yep, I've been there. I had an umbilical and ventral hernia repaired same day years ago. You will heal quickly and as johnjuanb1 said, stick to isolation exercises after the surgery. The scar from the surgery is minimal. Good luck, you'll be fine.

This ^^ I had my hernia done and took the time off...heck guess I just learned from when I had my knee replacement...seems to work better taking the break

I'm having mine repaired in a few weeks as well... Mine has gotten bigger over time and it's just time... Are you guys planning on staying on before your surgery or stopping? Let me know your thoughts ...
Thx

I had mine repaired a few years ago. Pretty easy surgery, not much pain afterwards. Starting lifting arms and light chest at 4 weeks and the remaining at 6 weeks-light and started going heavy again around 9-10 weeks. Never a problem afterwards and doesn't feel any different than prior to me tearing it.

Hey guys,

Just an update. I had my surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago and it was a breeze. There was a bunch of swelling around the area for a few days but it goes away as long as you keep icing it. The pain was minimal. They gave me a prescription for a bottle of pain killers and I didn't take a single one.

I went back to the gym after 7 days and just did some light cardio -- walking on the incline treadmill for an hour. It was boring as Hell but I couldn't just sit on my ass at home for another day.

After 10 days I started lifting VERY light weights -- isolation exercises only. I focused on keeping my core relaxed so as not to put pressure on the stitches, went really slow, paused at the top of each rep, etc. I never felt any pain or pulling from the area.

I've continued to lift in that same manner, though I admit I've gotten a little less cautious. Working legs really sucks because you can't squat, deadlift, or even leg press, but you do what you can.

My cycle ended about 10 days after the surgery. If I was early on in the cycle, I'd probably stay on, but I was at the end of a long cycle and was out of gear anyway.

I think certain compounds like EQ might even be helpful for recovery since it promotes collagen synthesis.

To sum up, it's pain in the ass, but if you don't get it fixed it will never get better on its own. If you're careful, you can do light isolation weights 1-2 weeks post-op.
