It looks like it is about to be made for release next year. Unfortunately it seems Kate is trying to wiggle out of the latex suit.
Kate Beckinsale Returning for Underworld 4? - News in Film
Kate Beckinsale could be returning to tight leather and retractable fangs in Underworld 3-D.
Bloody-Disgusting has learned the 36-year-old actress who portrayed vampire warrior Selene is currently attached to the fourth installment of the series, but is trying to wriggle her way out of contractual obligations or play a diminished role by “passing the torch.”
The site suggests Beckinsale’s daughter as a possible replacement, which had me scratching my head. Beckinsale’s daughter with actor Michael Sheen, little Lily Mo Sheen, had a small role in Underworld: Evolution, but she’s only 11 years old. Pre-teen vampire warrior? Or will they try another actress who bears a resemblance, like they did with Rhona Mitra?
It gets more confusing. If you believe other reports it appears her husband, Len Wiseman, may be returning to direct the fourth after stepping aside to merely produce the prequel and helm Live Free or Die Hard instead. However, the source for his return is an oddly worded piece in a throwaway Variety story on tax credits.
Here’s the verbage: “Aided by rebates, Gaul’s Duran Duboi will help deliver Underworld 3D, a spatialized version of 2003’s Underworld, directed by Len Wiseman and produced by Screen Gems/Lakeshore.”
The awkward sentence could either indicate Wiseman’s plans to shoot yet another Underworld sequel or it could simply be a reference to the team behind the original. Perhaps I’m analyzing it too much, but Wiseman agreeing to direct comes rather quickly after hiring a screenwriter and conflicts with his preparations for a Gears of War movie.
This will all need to be straightened out soon if Screen Gems/Lakeshore wants to hit its target release date of January 21, 2011.
