I personally use a wheel and do not feel it is a gimmick by any means....The wheel has been around for years and used tons in the boxing world. It not only helps the abs but the back and shoulders etc....yes you have to be careful and even a crunch can wreck your back, hell you know how many people still put hands behind head to do sit ups? I think this is more stress on the neck and back then the wheel.
If you decide to try it remember it is just another tool and you need to start slow and controlled and believe me only do a few because it will hurt if you over do it....
I use it three times a week between sets, really keeps things pumping
