Does anyone know, if i use my cell phone at work (wifi), can my employer look at what sites im viewing? And can I get in trouble? We are allowed to use our phones on break and lunch, i just want to know if i look at a site like this or another innapropriate site I can get fired, or in any trouble? Or can they not legally monitor what you use your cell phone?

Good question I do the same thing at work.
One thing for sure I don't WiFi to there wireless from my phone.

I was told by my previous employer that he could see what websites were visited on his wifi network but he couldn't see exactly what was being viewed. I don't know if there is any truth to that but I don't connect to anyone's wifi but my own. Store wifis can track you. Other free wifis can leave you vulnerable to hack. I'd play it safe and disconnect from it when your viewing something you don't want anyone to see.

If they monitor your online/phone activities do they have to tell you?

I mean, they could slip a legal disclaimer in your initial paperwork and you might not know.

If...

you gain internet access via THEIR wireless network, then you probably are used to seeing that 'i agree' to terms and conditions message. Then you're accessing the internet via THEIR connection and everything you do is ripe for picking. If you're on your phone, on a wireless network provided by your ISP, say via satellite, then no you're good.

If you are using their wifi they can track usage. It's not a privacy issue. They are technically liable for any illegal activity that were to occur on their wifi ( think child porn). Typically companies that monitor also just block but I have seen companies that just peeped. I would highly recommend staying on your WAN data plan if you don't want you boss seeing what you are looking at. And yes, with the right software they can see the exact page, video, pictures you were looking at.

What someone does on their phone or other personal gadgets ON A BREAK is no one else's business so long as what's being done with the gadget is legal. Visiting a bodybuilding website and READING is not illegal. Aside from viewing child pornography or making illegal drug or financial deals, I can't think of anything else illegal done with tech gadgets.

Since when is it a crime to read and talk about steroids?

What like looking up porn? Ill just weed through the bs since that's probably what you want to know. I wouldn't worry about it I do it all the time on my works wifi

Yes you could get in trouble if using their WiFi. Your employment agreement should expressly state what is and is not acceptable.
That said; most people in charge of the network activity don't really care what you're looking at and wouldn't even look unless instructed by someone else. They also couldn't tell whose phone it was if looking at past data.

If you use the company provided WIFI, then yes they have the ability to monitor it.

If you use your phones 4G/LTE, then the answer is negative!

You could connect through a VPN and they'll not be able to check anything.

It's not a matter of it being a crime...Looking at porn isn't a crime but looking at it while at work is usually against policy...The question is what is acceptable to look at while at work and using their network.
