Hey all, got a couple questions about waist / gut size. I know the GH / roid gut issue has probably been beat to death, so I wont bother asking about how to reverse that lol. But, I've heard from time to time that doing deadlifts can widen your midsection, and that this is why bodybuilders don't frequently do them. I started out with competitive raw powerlifting for years, but then ended up bulging my L5-S1, so I can only do sumo deadlifts now. Anyways, my interests have leaned towards bodybuilding. Should I cut them out to reduce my waist size? Also, anything else I can do to minimize waist size during my next cut? Thanks in advance.

IIRC, deadlifts will make your waist wider by thickening your lower back... not necessarily your obliques..


squats on the other hand... may be an area of concern.




want to keep a smaller waist?

-don't overeat
-don't abuse insulin/hgh
-be sensitive to insulin (to reduce accumulation of visceral fat)
-eat plenty of fiber

a friend of mine has been a Kentwood water delivery guy for years now , never deadlifted or squated much but he has a thick waist from constantly lifting 5 gallon bottles and loading them from the truck to a cart. His whole core has grown to adapt to the years of work.

So in short i don't think deads will make your waist and wider from a front profile but may add to the overall circumference do to building the lower lumbar region of the back

Dead lifts activate core muscles more then most any other exercise from the EEG studies I have seen so they could widen a persons waistline.

My oblique's are very large from yrs of shoveling and using my core to stabilize my body and perform heavy construction.
Almost looks like fat until you poke it, you will break a finger.
