Weird Knee Problem

Hey Guys (and Gals). I'm having a weird issue with my knee that I'm hoping someone has insight into.

Started as pretty bad pain on the back outside (ALMOST to hamstring) that was fairly shooting, it then kind of morphed to the opposite corner. So the front inside and now just kinda hurts all the time. In the last 2 days that back center also has been achy. Never any bruising, never any swelling, been going on for like a week plus now though and hasn't markedly gotten better. There was no real acute thing when it started, was getting up off the couch.
It doesn't seem to be that unstable, I trained legs last week without free squats pretty successfully, was just very careful.

Just thought I'd see if anyone has had similar before, I'll schedule something with a doctor but just moved and this Corona bs isn't helping.

I doubt it’s a tear. Possibly a partial but more than likely a strain/sprain. Could be inflammation of the ligament which I get all the time from my repaired knee. Try Aleeve or similar for a few days and see if it improves.

I have an unfortunate history of shit just blowing up. Still not sure what's going on, I moved, and do not have a new house yet so a lot of things are not my norm. Different couches, different bed, etc. I wondered if that isn't causing it and it may be the case. I was able to kinda roll the ham / IT band on that side hard when I was lifting yesterday and it seemed to improve for a few hours. Then took some Aleve last night and it does feel a bit better.

As usual, as soon as I actually complain about and ask about something it goes away. Figures.

I had similar symptoms, and took October, November and December completely off -- no running, no cross-training -- and had ZERO improvement. This was after marathon training through the pain for five months.

In January, I joined a gym and worked the Nautilus leg machines a few times a week, and got on the elliptical trainers for 40 minutes while at the gym.

After only a few weeks, I was able to gradually introduce running and have built up to about 45 miles a week. I have recently added VO2max and threshold workouts. And still do the Nautilus machines a couple times a week, but plan to mostly switch to lunges, squats, leg lifts, etc.

The knee discomfort is still there, but it's manageable. It doesn't wake me at night anymore, and I can sit for prolonged periods (like at a restaurant), without the throbbing pain I had previously with. Walking down stairs is still uncomfortable, but much improved.

I am assuming it is "runners knee," and addressing strength imbalances is helping the patella to track properly with less irritation.

I am 58, so even older than you. Marathon pace last fall was 7:08/mile, so definitely not a speedster, but still running reasonably well, and getting back to those paces as the fitness is returning.

Best wishes.
