I was stronger at age 38 than when i was yougner. Im not sure when the age thing kicks in for losing stregth. The guy across the street is 50 yrs old and just benched 405 lbs for the first time, and he doesnt even really lift that hard.
What I felt, like you said, was the joint issue. I had to lift smarter when I was older. WHen I was young I feel like I was able to get away with doing things wrong and not pay the price. As I grew older I found it much more important to watch out for overtraining. Part of the overtraining problem though might have been the fact that I was lifting much heavier weight, and needed more recoupe time because of that.
