What are you reading in 2025?

I read and consume a lot of news/economics for work (and enjoyment too) so I've been doing more frivolous fiction on the side. Working through Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time again (I think I'm on book 10, it's fantasy). I originally started it in the late 80s as a teen and read it as released. Figured I'd make another run through it probably a year or so ago.

Listening to action trash when walking my dog.

Been a long time since I listened to something that is fiction, instead of economics/history/self improvement.

That one was good.

But I LOVED his series starting with Pillars of the Earth. Historical fiction is my thing, it seems.

Wilbur Smith's series following the Courtney family is outstanding.

I watched the Pillars tv show, which was decent.

I will check out that Smith book you recommended as just finishing up another Jack Carr novel.

This might be of interest to you. I read this way back in the 90s after travelling throughout France binging on all the history/castle (Rouen, Mt St Michel etc etc).

I really enjoyed this book.

Another historical "fiction" series that I enjoyed is below.

I just finished the "Prince of Tides" by Pat Conroy, and "Thru Hiking Will Break Your Heart" by Carrot Quinn. Starting on "A Prayer for Owen Meany" by John Irving tonight.

started game of thrones but stuck on book 4, there’s to many new storylines and not enough of the ones he spent three books building up to keep me interested.

Just started rereading “Aztec” by Gary Jennings, an amazing book if you’re into historical based fiction.

Also Colleen McCollough’s Rome series (The Grass Crown, Fortune’s Favorites , The First Man in Rome, etc. ) is getting a reread afterwards- if you’re into Roman history, it is a must read at least once in your life.

Over the last few weeks I listened to the following books:

Black Book - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/30736665-the-black-book?ref=nav_sb_ss_2_10
Red Book - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54492658-the-red-book

After Black Book I took a liking to the main character. These are not intellectual listens. Just good cop stories. Decent character development and some pretty good twists.

Currently listening to this one https://www.goodreads.com/book/show...arch=true&from_srp=true&qid=YbrBTzQZLS&rank=1

Just a spec ops/spy type book. Not bad writing and entertaining for the dog walks.

If you like military/war type books this one is very good. I am about half way through the audiobook.

Same author who did the Gray Man novels/movie.

introduction to the science of mental health by Father Chad ripperger.

I am catholic and have been listening to a lot of his stuff on bringing the proper masculinity that always existed back to Christianity for a while. I had a chance to meet him a while back and he talked about this book (didn’t know he was also a psychologist) and am giving it a read.

extremely interesting, I never heard of him, but I looked him up. Found a random reddit thread talking about his beliefs on demons and it was something I have heard anything like. I am a lifelong catholic, and while I never denounced my faith formally, I would def call myself a son that lost his way. Not criminally or anything over negatively, just sort of failure to connect with the faith and church after some time, and the longer I was away, the farther away I became.

Will probably make it through maybe three of them.

I have now consumed 3 of Greg Hurwitz's books, Orphan X.

I find them exceptional. His writing style and character development are top notch. The last one I listened to was Hellbent Book #3

I would suggest starting at book #1 as the character development builds book-to-book and you will miss out on some pretty cool aspects.

Absolutely the best action genre books I have encountered in years.

I read a lot of news/events/non-fiction/journals for my work so most of my other reading is pure pleasure.

Been working through Wheel of Time series for a 2nd time. First time started as a sophomore in high school and finished almost 25 years later when the last book came out (urg). This is a straight read through but it's huge so taken me a while - took a break in the middle for a almost a year. Final 2 books now and moving fast again. Looking forward to wrapping it up and moving on.

Man, I love high fantasy but never could get into the WoT… tried three times, it’s just so much material…

It hits a real slow point over 4-5 books in the middle as Robert Jordan lost control of his series/characters. Like 900 pages to get to the one pivotal scene. Admittedly, those final scenes are some of the very best in the entire genre so worth it but my God it's a very painful months of reading - ultimately worth it but most people die off here even if they were committed. Once Brandon Sanderson takes over it zips fast again and motivation returns.

End of the day, it's worth it if you like the genre but even knowing all of that it was very hard the 2nd time around.

Just got Benedict jacka new book , judgement of power in the Stephen Oakwood series

I just finished The Gulag Archipelago. Was on the list for a long time. So many reasons to avoid it. It was a lot to digest. Relieved its finally over.
