What causes calf atrophy in bodybuilders

I've seen plenty of bodybuilders who once had huge calves but then they lost them (while still competing and being at their best). Ian Valliere comes to mind. I can't remember the other ones right now. Maybe Urs too.

Does anyone know what causes this and how we can avoid it? I think Ian mentioned wearing knee wraps too tight and getting nerve damage from that. I guess that makes sense.

He's also against lat injections. Supposedly you can get nerve damage from doing that too. That's my favorite injection spot. I have someone inject my lats daily. No more lumps on quads, glutes, delts etc.

Iain never had calves. He got shit on all the time about it.

Out of curiosity, which bodybuilders are you referring to? The calf is an exceptionally "genetic" muscle; if you've always had good calves, it's really hard to lose them completely. Quads and hamstrings—okay, many lose them with age, but I honestly can't think of anyone who had large calves and lost them.
