Hey Guys,

I've been working in the gym alot this year (personal training took off like crazy this past 6 months) and I have been getting sick (flu, stomach virus) more often this year....Just got over a nasty stomach virus, this past week...Cost me 10lbs, sucks !!! LOL !!!

anyway, what do you take to keep your immune system strong ?
 
For me, getting 8 hours of quality sleep and keeping any stress under control are the single biggest factors. I can't count the times when I have had too much stress in my life, I would get sick.

Also add extra vitamin C and D
 
I agree. I think sleep is probable the way to do this. However, since I have accepted this job, I am lucky to get 8 hours of sleep a night. I can def. tell a difference since I havent been able to get the adequate amount of sleep I use to.

I think I may be able to add a bit to this thread.

Growing up I was always the "sick kid" any sneeze that comes my way, bam I got it. Forgetting to wash my hands before a meal? Got sick. Everyone would wonder whats wrong with me. I litterally would get sick, recover, and about 3 weeks later, get sick again. Almost never bacterial, always viral. Running noses, flu etc.

When I got sick, it wouldnt be the 3 day sniffles. I would go thru at least 3 big tissue boxes, with bloody sore nose, and about 2-3 week long intense colds.

In time, and desperation it was ruining my education, work, life.. I started to research what I can do. And now I must say, I get sick once in a blue moon. Last winter for the first time ever I did not get sick ONCE.

These are the things I take regularly and I really cannot believe this all works, but its undeniable with me, and now everyone who knows me.

Elderberry (Sambucus) 1 Teaspoon a day. AMAZING anti-viral

Olive Leaf Powder from Olivus (Not olive leaf extract as it doesnt have all the balanced constituents. Olive leaf is one of the most amazing things for viruses. It kills almost all viruses that are put against it in testing. (There can be a herxheimer reaction with so much pathogens being killed off, so becareful) I take 1 tablespoon every day.

Beta-1,3-Glucan (like epicor someone stated) It has the ability to increase white blood cell count, and increase the FUNCTION of the immune system. Macrophages are far more active. Attaches to them at their receptors signaling them to increase function and speed. Very interesting stuff. I take 500mg every day

Mushroom Extract with Reishi, shiitake, maitake and cordyceps are amazing at increasing T cells and immune function. I take 1 pill every day

Vitamin D. If you notice in northern America many flues start at the end of August, there is some studies on Vitamin D and its role in keeping flues at bay. After August, the sun shifts its angle, and our bodies do not produce adequate vitamin D at this time, due to inadequate UV. (Try to get sunlight between 10am and 2pm as the Sun angle is perfect for producing maximal vitamin D. This has been linked to flues acting up again, as viruses act in a cyclical fashion. I take 5000iu every day, especially after August.

Coconut Oil. Has lauric acid in it, infact a product called Lauricidin is an extract from this. Lauric acid is found in mothers milk as well and plays a big role in immunity. It actually helps liquify the shield around viruses, leaving them susceptible to our immune systems. (virus uses the fats to make its lipid layer, since lauric acid will not properly function in the lipid layer, the virus's protection disintegrates. I take two tablespoons every day.

Vira-Stop. Proteolyitic Enzymes. Some viruses have capsids around them, which are protein shields (basically). Vira-stop can go in and destroy those shields. I dont take this anymore due to price, but have before with great effects.

Oil of Oregano. VERY VERY POWERFUL STUFF. I have a nasal inhaler with oregano in it, I take oregano drops every day, and also oregano gel caps once a day. Everytime I feel a sniffle coming along, I take a sniff of my nasal spray and I dont get sick. It litterally destroys any bacteria, fungus, virus that comes in contact with it. Nothing can survive in my sinuses (where most common colds initiate viral replication.

And lastly for therapeutic reasons, I use aromatherapy from a nebulizer. I do this for fun, and it relaxes me. It has oregano oil in it, eucalpytus, ravensara, hyssop, Lime oil, and a few others. This goes from my nasal.. sinusus, into throat, and down into lungs. Helped me get over pneumonia once very fast. I do not actually get sick anymore, and when I do, its usually done in a day or two.

And I cannot forget garlic, 1 clove a day with food!

bcomplex with vitamin c once in the morning and once at night, i have not been sick in over 3 years since doing this... so i swear by it.
 
I eat salmon every day (Vit.D), and oranges (Vit.C) and take a liquid supplement called Mega Vital, it has lots and lots of goodies in it. Link: MEGA VITAL

sleep is by far the most important...i work outside year round and even in the winter i only get sick if i don't get enough sleep
 
Seems a lot of folks on this thread take 'supplements" to protect and strengthen there immune system.

I know this seems like a cliche on this board, however, what about the "power of food" ?

Not saying these supps don't help, however, nothing beats real food and real spices.

i dont take anyting other then garlic, real garlic; in all my foods, real lemon and lime juice. These are just a few of the items my great, great grandparents would use that gets passed on generation to generation.

Real story, my old man, who very food cautious, who has not been sick literally in 10 years eats a specific honey Greece, garlic, berries, armenian yogort and a few other items that are not available in North America.

Anyhow, I am proud to stay, I have yet to be sick in 5 years, even when cals are low and dieting is intense, I follow my old mans protocal, works for me anyhow.

thats the biggest thing right their , the gym is one nasty ass mixing pot for germs , all kinds of sweat and spit everywhere , if you swabbed a bech at any gym it woul probably look like a swab from a public bathroom.

A good multi vit a day , 100mg zinc a dav and a B complex vite every days is what I take.

But their is no better sickness prevention that limiting your contact with germs
 
I get a shot of immunogloblin about 3 times a year. I have asthma and allergies, and was prone to get sick several times during the winter. I have been doing these shots for about 2 years. I went from getting sick 3-4 times a year to maybe once. I really boosts the immune system. They give them to soldiers and people who travel to third world countries normally.

Of course I also take a multi and vitamin D for immune function too.

this and genetics! and some extra sleep n stress reduction...other than that is there really anything clinically proven to boost imune system...i dont know much about immunoglobin but maybe..
 
There are many things. Adequate sleep being most important and controlling stress levels. Thats why vit c and b are great. B for your nervous system/stress etc. Vit c to boost your immune system. I would get a good multi vit to cover all bases. And take vit c at 500mg (fairly small dose) throughout the day (4 or 5 times).

I recommend amny things to my customers. Echinacea can be really good too. Garlic another. You can get that through your food too but I imagine tabs would be more suitable for you. Manuka honey is great. Take that afetr workouts. Zinc another one... has many uses for bodybuilders.

You can take too many things at times. And I imagine you are probably taking quite a few tabs and shakes (many of vits in) anyway. But if I was to rec a set up it would be

1 strong multi vitamin
500mg vit c throughout the day
Garlic or Echinacea (Ech during the winter and garlic during the summer)
Zinc or ZMA before you go to bed
Maybe manuka honey with breakfast and post workout
 
I check my Waking Heart Rate every morning before I get out of bed. If you are overtraining, it will be elevated and this opens you up to a lower immune system. I use to get sick all the time from over traing "over-reaching to you purists"
