A widened waist is the absolute last thing im looking for. Its my weakpoint now and i do not want it to grow anymore. So, with that being said, what excersises should I avoid other than deadlifts. How about partial deads on the shrug machine? What should I avoid and what can you substitute for them? Thanks guys.

Excessive kcals will widen your waist big time :p

First of all if you are taking the spinal erectors to failure, they are going to grow. But first, let me get this straight.. You are going to skip all trunk exercises to make your trunk thinner!?

From what I have seen, if you have a thick waist its because you have a thick waist genetically, exercise doesn't have much to do with it. Personally if your spinal erectors are developed to their fullest, it will draw the eye away from any thickness you think you are suffering from.

Do you have like a GH/Slin gut thing going on at all?

no gh gut, its just over the years the waist has widened. When I was around 12% b/f at 200lbs waiste was around 34"(about 4years ago) and now im 250lbs at the same b/f and waiste is 36".

Mostly squats, and deadlifts. But to tell you the truth any exercise that requires stabilization will have some effect on your waist.

does anyone think wearing or not wearing a belt has an effect on this?

Wide waist... that's genetics for you. However, I would never recommend avoiding exercises for the abs and lower back. They are so important especially the older you get. Your spine is supported by you abs and lower back. Think of it like your upper arm... bi's and tri's support the upper arm bone.

IMO, if you are using machines to do ab or low back exercises, then keep it low weights and high reps. You can keep abs looking good by doing old fashion sit-ups and crunches... do lots of them. You don't need any added weight to do these.

question/;answer

I have never known anyone who has nice abs from doing good old fashioned situps and crunches and lots of them. How good your abs look is directly correlated to how lean you are in that area. If you want a small waist do not train abs at all, let your stabilizing exercises and genetics shape your waist.

I never meant someone could develop ab muscles this way. Plus he wasn't wanting to develop bigger ab muscles, so I was just trying to give him some options.

But after a near fatal car accident that broke my neck and have lower back problems, I can assure you that eliminating abs exercise from your routine isn't the answer either. Keeping a healthy strong back should be everyone's goal.

SORRY

WHEN YOU SAID

I TOOK THAT AS YOU TELLING HIM TO DO CRUNCHES AND SIT UPS TO KEEP THE ABS LOOKING GOOD.

Weighted crunches would do it for you.

Maybe your BF is higher than you think. I know I always think I am lean, till I diet down, then I realize I wasn't.

If you don't do abs your going to get a hernia ... not training abs is dangerous advice.

If you are doing movements like heavy deads, rows, squats, etc. your abs will get work. I dont think just because you dont train abs directly means that you are subjecting yourself to injury.

I agree with what Maldorf said in the other thread, and what Phil said here, that youre waist is probably safe doing deads/squats/etc. if you dont train your abs directly

WOW, I always abbs on the machine with weight. Like 160lbs weight. Maybe thats it. My abbs are actually pretty big(when you can see them) I always thought it was b/c I did weighted abb excersises. Maybe I should just ditch abbs all together and let my leg and back day take care of them?

I truly believe heavy core movements will make your waist grow. Phil Heath is a big example...grew all over, lots of deads for back...WAIST isnt big becuase his waist structure is small...but his obliques are HUGE!

I havnt done a sit up in years. I also do rack pulls with 6 plates and bent barbell rows and rdls with 405 with no belt.
So I should go over to the ball and do a set of 20 crunches to protect myself from a hernia?
