Benzyl alcohol (BA) is used as a bacteriostatic preservative at low concentration in intravenous medications. A fairly potent solvent, whose main function for our purposes is keeping a solution bacteriostatic. It’s presence as low as 0.9% is enough to prevent practically all microbial growth in solution. Its use in Steroids is to preserve the suspension for months, even years, without any reduction in sterility. It is also one of the thinnest (that is best for viscosity reduction).
Side effect
However, if too much is used the Steroid will be painful to inject and will cause post injection soreness.The major drawback to this solvent is that it tends to make for painful injections if the concentration goes above 10%. (This is true for any low molecular weight alcohol). Less than this tends to be painless for most people.Unfortunately, it can also cause the destruction of cells and significant localised pain and inflammation. The discomfort is characterised by fairly rapid onset of a painful, red, swollen area.
Benzyl- Benzoate (BB) is a solvent. This means solutes such as Hormone Powders dissolve easily in it, and that is the main purpose of its use in Steroids. The Benzyl Benzoate is used to dissolve and suspend the Hormone Powder. If the correct amount of this solvent is not used the Hormone powder will ‘undissolve’ from the solution causing the Steroids to ‘Crash’ (get cloudy/less effective). It helps keep it in solution in depot (injection site), and thins the gear so it is easy to draw and inject.

It is not nearly as strong and much heavier than the benzyl alcohol so benzyl benzoate is used primarily for its latent effects in the depot. Namely it helps keep the hormone in solution at the injection site after the more water-soluble benzyl alcohol has leached from the depot. benzyl benzoate is constructed of two benzene rings bridged by a carbonyl group, this making the solvent extremely hydrophobic. It is also painless at low levels and nearly painless at 15-20% for most people.
Ethyl Oleate (EO) is a solvent that dissolves steroid powder, but its purpose is to make the viscosity of the solution thinner. It is a thin and expensive oil produced from ethanol used as a rubber softener, a solvent that is commonly used as our steroid matrix solution. It provides a smooth and painless injection and will be suspended at a higher concentration than just oil Compounds. (It will make 100mg / ml of sucrose completely painless) and because it is a solvent that allows you to use less benzyl benzoate in the mixture, but BA is still used to maintain sterility.
The bottom line
For most guys, PIP will most likely occur with gear that utilizes BA/BB as the base solvent. (especially in higher mg/ml preparations). Some other causes of PIP can be attributed to the fact that the IM injection itself is an invasive procedure. Opening a new IM injection site can sometimes cause soreness. And finally, the physical location of the injection can result in discomfort after the injection, as well as the volume of the substance injected.
