4th year Veterinary Student. Been working at the racetrack and small animal hospitals since I was a kid. What can I say I just want to give horses steroids :D

I don't see a category where I would fit... By the S/N you'll probably guess Architect, I'm also a structural Engineer...

Most of my income comes from Building Code consulting. I'm hired by other Architects, Engineers, Developers or Attorneys to explain what they can use their land for, how that can be changed and the required elements that go with their building, such as parking, landscaping, maximum height and s.f. of the proposed structure...
I also design, but when I'm hired by architects, I simply check their work to save them time before it's submitted for building permit. One mistake can mean waiting an additional 6 months for permit issuance, on very big projects that can amount to millions... It's very rewarding but can be extremely stressful... I wake up in cold sweats 3 out of 4 nights... It's helped me deal with other stressful things in my life very easily...

So much schooling, so little pay. The human route is much more rewarding ;) I think Gooey would agree with me. It takes an animal lover to make that little with that much education. Good Luck.

I've been in post-high school education for 6 years, only like 3 more left but who's counting. ha. Also spending 12-16 hours/week on independent research in the lab.

No kidding! It was tough long road to get to where I am now, while the median avg salary is about 70k. Fortunately in my area (Los Angeles) ... California in general, Vets are in high demand (only two SVM Universities to service 37 mil people) the pay is much better. If you own your own practice it can be worth your while. Not a day goes by I wish I would have went the human route (only one species! lol)

Oilfield.

Well checker.

On a day to day basis; I do many things. I make arrangements with the family, and this is probably one of the toughest aspects. What i mean by toughest is the emotion that is present. I sit down with the family and go over all of the details for the funeral. Visiting hours, church services, cemetery etc. I also go to the place of death; hospital, nursing home, house, me office etc, and take the body back to the funeral home. I also prepare the body by way of embalming which is basically replacing the blood with embalming fluid(formaldehyde) Once that is finished the body is dressed, and then i apply make up and do hair. The body is then placed in the casket and set up in the viewing room. I also direct the funeral at the church or funeral home, and also direct at the cemetery. There is a lot of behind the scenes work as well. Contacting the doctor to sign a death certificate, and filling out the certificate with the vitals. Filing the certificate with the neccessary township for burial. Contacting the cemetery to locate a family plot or grave site. Contacting the church and arranging the dates and times etc. There is a lot to arrange for and NO mistakes can be made. The smallest of errors can turn a very pleasant family into a very angry family. Attention to detail is very very important; from hair, cosmetics, timing, spelling mistakes on a death certificate,a late limousine, etc etc can make for a disaster.

I was an apprentice for a few years and I must say the thing that drove me out of the business was having to deal with the families. It was just heart breaking to me and honestly I was just too emotional attached so I had to move on. It's too bad because I honestly really enjoyed working in the prep room with the directors. It's deffinently not what I expected. It's amazing to watch the body change before your eyes while you're embalming. The funeral home I worked at wasn't very busy either. Your talking maybe 300 calls a year and probably half were cremation. It seems tut everyone is going to cremation, have you noticed this pattern?

Making arrangements can really be heartbreaking, and very tough mentally; especially when a child is involved. The way I deal with that aspect is to make sure i can do everything in my power to ease the burden on the family. If I can take some of the burden off the family then i have done my job. As far as cremation..yes the trend is def. going that way; especially because of the economy. The problem i have with this business is that it is too one dimensional, and thats why I am going back to school to get my R.N.

Software

Independant Software Engineer / Consultant for 20 years- basically a "hired gun" for usually 6 months to 2 years at a time.

It was very lucrative first 15 years but it's terrible now as there are many foreigners that came here during "dot-com boom" on visas that expired but they never went home. Now they will work for 1/2 what I will- they live sometimes with 8 people to an apartment and will move at the drop of a hat.

I wish the governement would do something about tracking down these illegals and deporting them. They can work offshore and I'll send them tasks

Been a trucker for almost 10 years....currently haul Haz-Mat and Haz-Waste for an environmental company with a vacuum tanker.

The first couple years it was cool, but now the novelty has worn off....acid and caustic burns aren't really anything to brag about to people with regular jobs any more, LOL, or dealing with IDLH chems (stuff that'll kill ya with a small wiff)

If I listened to my mother when I was younger and stayed out of trouble I could probably be a BAMF state trooper or something cool, but nope. I would've liked to join the military, but since I have a young 'un I just as soon stay close to home.

Information technology management (LINUX/UNIX) in a finance firm.

job satisfaction - Fairly high. Enjoy my work for the most part but it can fry my nerves sometimes. The pay is good, tech is one of my hobbies so in the end I win.

years spent at that job - 3 years in Japan. Before that 10 years at a software company doing the same.

what you would prefer to do? - ideally work with high-end car personalization and modification. Ie Schnitzer, Alpina, Carlsson, Brabus, Abt, Oettinger, Breyton, Hamann, Techart, Ruf, etc... LOVE German cars and tuning...

what do you see yourself doing in 3 years, 5 years, 10 years? - IT work. It pays the bills most consistently.

Who's my other non-profit person??? Make you prescense known!!!

I work in social services providing to services to chronically mentally ill adults who live independently in the community. In addition I conduct trainings for local and state law enforcement officers on how to engage at-risk youth, how to do suicide assessments (which often means encouraging officers to play the role of taxi driver and transport in-crisis-youth and adults to acute care psych facilities). Our officers, though well trained, did not , typically, sign on to be crisis counselors nor do they (at least the ones I know) want to be responsible for conducting an assessment on a potentially suicidal patient. I've been doing this for quite some time... and it's tough... my patients who have been chronically suicidal, determined, intelligent... have despite my awareness, training, and that gut feeling for when something bad is on the horizon... have killed themselves... I've lost 2 people over the last several years... the most recent was around last Christmas. I'd be open to sharing the story with those interested.

Yes... and every day I find time to selfishly strength train and train jiu jitsu.
