I'm looking to add more red meat into my diet, but I have always kind of stayed away because there are so many different kinds at the store and it seems like the good ones cost too much money. What are good steaks/red meats to buy that won't make me go broke?

Go strait to a local farmer and buy in bulk. You can get a quarter cow for around 4.50 a pound that will have all different cuts. You can usually even choose your cuts. Plus you know where your beef is coming from

I am really cheap with all my protein sources except beef. I get everything else from Costco. However, for my beef, I get it from skinnybeef.com. Expensive, but extremely lean grass fed ground beef. It's the only red meat I eat and I can eat as much as I want.

I buy half cow at a time. My guy charges $2.89 pound, and he vac packs it however you want it. I have him age it 35 days for me.

Costco has good costing steaks. They have good costs on just about everything imaginable.

But I usually hit up my local meat market and get "shoulder tenders" which are extremely lean yet extremely tender. Usually goes for $5-$6/lb. They cant be beat.

If you like fattier steaks like ribeyes, get chuck eye steaks instead. They are cut from the same exact roll but are more towards the ends of the roll instead of the middle. They got for about $6/lb on sale. And god damn do they taste good.

Another one of my favorites is sirloin filets.

I used to work at meat market so I know my steak :) Some places call different cuts by different names. Just tell the guy working what you're looking for and they should help you out.

I should mention I live in the midwest so I'm sure our prices are way cheaper than where you're at. Then again maybe not.

I eat a lot of top sirloin, lean and tender

Arizona has Albertson's they always have Buy One Get One on meats.

My roommate and I always grab Top Sirlion, a couple London Broilers for the Crockpot, and a couple Ribeyes for our higher fat days.

Grass fed! I limit my red meat intake to once or twice a week. I love it but feel better eating less of it and high quality when I do.

When I'm not limiting my fat intake I buy grass fed beef if I can find some that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. That rarely happens though :/

I too use Costco. I use London broil and ground beef, 93% or better. If I really want a treat I get some filets.

Offseason I eat grassfed ground beef almost exclusively - 4 to 5 bucks a pound direct from the farmer. A pound of that a day is great for growth. I like to mix mine at about a 2:1 ratio beef:eek:rganic black beans and then throw it on top of some rice.

Pre-contest I transition to leaner cuts and typically stick with soy sauce marinated top round (london broil) that I trim the fat off of.

I love sirloin with A-1 sauce, my absolute favorite...

I go to a local butcher shop (I shopped around) and found a place that has package deals..If I spend like 50-75 dollars I get a bulk discount and a variety of meats...aka steaks, hamburgers, sausage, etc...

If I am particularly tight on money I go with a basic London Broil. not very tender unless you marinate it, but I can get a nice chunk of meat for 3-4 bucks!

I don't buy any meat from grocery stores - it's all feed lot meat, and I won't buy it.
We have a local slaughter house, local people bring in there cows, pigs that they grown locally in fields with grass in them.
I wish I had pictures of the feed lots in the mid west, if you saw them you would never eat commercial meat..

i have a rib eye most night and once a week lamb backstrap

the lamb is delicious but very expensive in Australia, that meal alone costs me about $15 so I only have it once a week

Found some thin sliced top sirloin london broil at my local grocery store for pretty cheap. Looks like I found what I'm looking for. Sadly, I don't have places like Costco here.

Have you tried that "Bold and Spicy A-1"? if you havent then you MUST. Its dank as fuck on chicken too.

I like the thin cut sirloins. And ground beef always 96%

Appreciate it!

I also love A1 and will try that. I also like to put olive oil on my steaks as it seems to give it a better taste. I am from the south so we have Sams instead of Cosco. The more you buy the better deal you get. I also buy in bulk from my uncle who raises cows and they are grass(hay) for the most part and he gives it to me for cost. Lucky on that end I guess.

I'd be interested to know how many people hunt here. If you have access to land and a large chest freezer or two you could put enough organic and healthy meat in their to last till next season. Then go fishing at the right times and you could significantly cut down on food bills. Unfortunately for me I can't do this at the moment due to being at school but would like to be set up like this some day.
