I did Arnold style volume during my noob days.
When noob gains stopped (about ten years ago), I always did some sort of HIT variant, back when everything more than few sets was considered overtraining. They worked ok for me, I was able to progress in strength quite a bit, but I don't think the mass gains were optimum for my body using those programs.
I did some very high volume stuff like the programs Serge Nubret did. I don't think it worked very well for my body, I just felt I was getting more conditioned in the weight room as opposed to getting bigger and stronger.
I was doing 5/3/1 for a while, loved that program, great for strength. I never used the boring but big template until recently. It is 5 sets of 10 of the same exercise you just did your maxes on, but with about 50-60% of the max weight.
My body responded well to it, and I felt that maybe I should give a bit more volume a shot. I hadn't realized that my approach to lifting during that ten years was all or nothing.... I had either done HIT type stuff (DC, BigA), or massive volume (Arnold, Serge). I never did anything in between.
So now I just do a few sets of a max weight (sort of like 5/3/1), but my assistance work is anywhere from 3-5 extra exercises, 5 sets of 10, with a decent weight for me and done with a rep or two left in the tank.
This has been working very well for me so far.
Moderate volume and intensity I suppose you would call it. I wish I would have given it a shot a long time ago.
Certain parts like side and rear delts seem to respond very well to it. For legs I still like just a few heavy work sets and maybe 5 sets of 10 @ 60% max.
