What ONE thing do all successful people have in common?

Visualization.

I was watching an episode of Inside the Actor's Studio with Dave Chappelle and he said that when he was 14 he saw Bill Cosby on the cover of Time magazine and he decided he was going to be a comedian.

"I knew it in that moment that it was I was going to be. I could see it in my mind!"

When reading biographies of successful people the theme of visualization comes up often. Try to notice how many people who have achieved something great started by imagining it and never letting go of that mental picture.

It doesn't matter what you want to do. Bodybuilding, making documentaries, making money, having a happy family; it's all the same. Thinking something is always the first step to making it real.

When MLK said, "I have a dream," he wasn't kidding. That's how it's done.

Think it. Do the work. Make it real.

What about you? What is your goal and can you see it in your mind? Do you think about it every night as you fall asleep and is it the first thought on your mind when you wake up on the morning? Does visualization work for you?

Couldn't agree more.. Not just wanting something put puting a picture with it. Seeing it in your mind.. Then acting on it.

i read an article a couple years ago about a study, or survey they did at harvard university. in 1987 they asked the entire graduating class "where do you see yourself in 20 years?" everyone had an answer. some saw themselves as millionaires, business owners, politicians, whatever it was. then they asked "how do you plan on getting there?" only three percent could answer this question. this three percent had a plan on how exactly they were going to reach their goals, and what actions they had to take to get there. in 2007 they found whoever they could i guess that participated in that study in 1987, i think almost every one of them were contacted. it turned out that the three percent that had a plan, or an outline for their future and reaching their goals had a higher net worth than the other 97 percent combined!
knowing what you want isnt enough, you have to know what to do to get it i guess....just thought it was an interesting article..

I think that ties in to decisions. Tony Robbins talks about this. Once you make a decision, you've thrown away all other possibilities. Once Dave Chapelle told himself he was going to be a comedian, he threw away all other possibilities. Visualization is a very natural part of success. It's sad how some don't have anything like that in their lives.

Confidence plays a role too. When I visualize where or what I'm going to be doing years from now, regardless of how ridiculous, I assume I will get my outcome. Call it confidence or being thick-headed... but some say "I'm going to lose 50lbs!", and they always wind up failing.

Mike Murdock and Joel Osteen are awsome people to listen to. The speak on stuff like this.

They work at being successful most every waking moment.

...and, of course, genetics.

Although, I think a preternatural work ethic is more important. Work ethic is compulsory, good genes aren't.

Read this. The one that started it all.

Thats some great inspiration! Vision is something you need for success.

Mike:

I certainly believe what your saying to be true. A vision, a dream, a wish. I would like to persue this slightly further. My opinion is that quite a few have a dream or vision. The true challenge I see, is them leaving in that "ethereal" world of the mind, and not mapping it into reality in any sense.

That first step, be it research, writing down the dream or vision, or whatever seems to be the biggest chasm facing people. After the first step you have a little mental and physical intertia. It seems just the act of doing something in the physical world separates the one whose dreams can come true from the rest.

Interesting discussion.

This is a good post.

The other thing is picking yourself back up when you fail and not giving up on that dream.

Dan Gable did this too. He used to visualize him winning his match before he ever stepped foot on the mat. Drive+visualization=success.

One last thing....

In 1972 he won the Olympic gold in Munich. Nobody scored a single point on him the entire time. There is only one other person that got close which was Tom Brands who only had a single point scored on him during the 1996 games. Guess who his coach and mentor was? You guessed it, Dan Gable. He was coached at Iowa by him as well. He (Tom) won three national titles his last three years. This type of thought process was almost forced down your throat at Iowa but then again look at Gables track record.
