There's quite a few Aussies on the board. In your opinion where would be the better place for a persons first time to Australia?
Couple in their mid 30's to early 40's. Fine dining, good nightlife, day excursions for sites, authenticity of culture, good shopping are the things we usually look for when picking a city to travel to.
We'll have 14-18 days and we usually like renting a house or condo off VRBO or airbnb instead of using hotels.
Avid weightlifters but usually use vacations as a rest period and like to do walking and/or excursions for our exercise.

Do both...short plane trip from Sydney to Melbourne...both are fantastic and have different things to offer in each destination.

Both are great I live in Melbourne so if you like culture and good food from all cultural backgrounds Melbourne if for you

I lived in Sydney. Melbourne is too fucking cold for me. Sydney is better than Melbourne. Too many wogs lived in Melbourne lol

ill compare for you

Sydney
better for site seeing, has the opera house, bridge, olympic park, darling harbour, etc, nicer weather thats consistant

Melbourne
world renown food and restaurants, have some of the best in the world, its really a case of whats ya preference, its a very culture rich city thats nothing like the rest of Australia
shopping melbourne is better then sydney but Australia isnt really comparable to the U.S.A in terms of shopping, we have alot less to offer

melbourne also has the biggest bodybuilding gym in the southern hemisphere, its worth checking out, i train there

melbourne has the best casino in aus, not becoz of gambling but its setup for food, dining, shopping, etc and is great for everyone, and is on the the yarra river, sydneys casino really is disspointing

night life is also huge in melbourne, sydney shuts shop early and alcohol isnt purchasable after 10pm unless your in a club due to the high violent drunk crime offences occurring in sydney lately, clubs and bars by law also have to shut early

Melbourne on the other hand is open all night, some venues/clubs dont shut and run from friday night till sunday night straight through

we have the biggest football stadium in aus, and are the capital of sports in australia as we host almost everything major

most people you ask who live in sydney will tell you they travel to Melbourne to have a good time

the only down side to Melbourne is its cold, people always say we have 4 seasons in a day, and its true, goes from nice and sunny, to rain, to clear, to blowing a gale LOL

if ya need a hand with info into where to see and try in melbourne PM me

personally i would do both, 14-18 days is alot of time to spend in one city here in aus, best to see both,
hire a car while your here becoz in aus you need a car to go see everything, public transport isnt the greatest

if ya do decide to see both id say spend more time in melbourne, sydney after youve seen the sites runs out of things to do pretty fast

bloke, than you for the breakdown. I was hoping someone would give me a set point to get an idea. It sounds like Melbourne, based on your assessment, is likely to be our home base. Given the short commute to Sydney, as other have suggested, it sounds like a plane ride and 2-4 days in Sydney would be doable, or even putting 3-4 days on the end of the trip and flying home out of Sydney.
Time for a bit of research, I see. THanks, guys

Hit the Gold Coast or further north in winter. Melbourne and Sydney are fucking cold this time of year.

Both are good but I would have to say I prefer Melbourne with Sydney a close second.

So much good food in Melbourne, I put on 4 kg in a week in Melbourne and that was while trying to watch what I ate hahaha.

lmao...there are bogans in Melbourne too, Asians, wogs, greeks, muslims etc...all fucking follow AFL hehe!
Sydney has better public transport than Melbourne. We got the famous landmarks more than Melbourne. We got better restaurants and better chefs than Melbourne. Tetsuya wakada, Neil Perry list goes on celebrity chefs etc. We got better stadiums etc...wallabies play there etc many other sporting events held in Sydney etc....Sydney Olympics too !! hehe

Nah me neither mate but the tourists love it.

Is rather head a little north to noosa ... Or Broome ;)

gold coast is nice for a few days, but it gets boring once uve done the beach and theme parks

LOL wont argue on the public transport part, we suck balls,

LOL we only got Bogans in the outer suburbs, i flew to sydney 2 weeks ago, honestly felt like i was in another country wen i stepped off that plane HAHAHAHA,
after flying 40mins i got off the plane coming from a place that was cold and windy where people were having some fine dining and rugged up in coats, to arrive in a city where its humid, everyone still has fake tans, girls got short shorts that look like g strings (not complaining) and everyone talks in aussie slang, not to mention everyone is wearing thongs in the shopping centres in the middle of the city

lol u got a few of some world reknown chefs ud pay ur weeks paycheck for lol, but overall food melbourne has more culture and variety and better standard in my opinion anyways, n last i checked almost every review magazine and artile i read melbourne gets better reviews then sydney on food quality

LOL what better stadiums? what sporting events? u got rugby, thats it, and your olympic park is almost in another state its that far from the city LOL,

although i like sydneys water ferrys, there pretty cool

PS: ur funnel web spiders can kiss my ass

LOL man broome is the most boring place on earth, its beauiful but once uve seen it boredom kicks in, its full or retires site seeing and camping, only thing more boring then broome is Cairns, but to be real there almost the same,
both stinking hot, nice beaches, nice resorts,
And to top it all off your not allowed on the beaches or in the water becoz ull die as a result of getting eaten by a crocodile or shark, stung by a box jelly fish, stung by a tanjy (however you say it), step on a stone fish or bitten by a snake or spider

noosa alright i guess, i personally am a bigger fan south of goldcoast Byron bay, Nimbin, Tweed heads, there a little to commercialised for me these days but that dont stop the hippis selling hash cookies in the souvenir shop
