ACE inhibitors (Captopril, Lisinopril, etc) and Angiotensin Receptor Blockers (Losartan, Valsartan, etc) are two of your more "entry level" pharmaceutical methods to combating HTN. Lisinopril is super cheap and effective for most, however 1 in 10 will get that commonly associated cough. When that happens, an ARB like Valsartan is often used and the problem is relieved. That's the nice thing though with the ACE inhibs/ARBs, there are essentially no side effects. For most, it's akin to a sugar pill. The only thing more basic would be a diuretic. Typically for HTN, the drug of choice would be Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ).
